Tommy Lee Harrington
January 31st, 1933 - July 31st, 2020
Deacon Tommy Lee Harrington was born on January 31, 1933 in Chesterfield, South Carolina to the late Christine Harrington. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Bill, Roy, and Theodore; his wife for whom he enjoyed and loved for over 50 years, Carrie Mae Harrington; and his youngest daughter, Dorothy Harrington. “Mr. Tommy,” as he was affectionately known by his younger co-workers, retired from the City of Greensboro after more than 35 years of service in the Transportation Department. He took great pride in serving the community and never complained about the ever changing weather or his working conditions. Deacon Harrington was a loving and caring father who (along with their mother) reared his children in a Christian home. Going to church, serving the Lord and being actively involved was never optional. He was a very dedicated and devoted member of Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church in Greensboro, North Carolina. He faithfully served on the Deacon Board for more than 50 years. He also served as a member of the Male Chorus, a family Ward Leader and former Church Treasurer. He served God by helping others and did so with great compassion and commitment. Deacon Harrington was a man of good reputation, full of the Spirit and full of wisdom. He was well respected by all that knew him. Although a modest and humble man, he enjoyed stylishly dressing on Sundays. He always carried himself in a sharp and well-groomed manner. Even his slick-fine hair “good grass,” as he called it, had to be combed back perfectly in place. His smile was infectious and he was always set for a good dose of laughter. Although large in stature, his sense of integrity and heart for others was even bigger. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grands for they brought him great joy. He always eagerly looked forward to visits from his sisters, He will be greatly missed and forever remembered in the hearts and minds of those he leaves to cherish his memories: his children, Tommie Harrington (Tammy), Atlanta, GA; devoted and loving caregiver, Betty Harrington, Greensboro, NC; Greg Harrington (Brenda), Greensboro, NC; Dennis Harrington, Greensboro, NC; two sisters; Chorine Williams and Betty Christina Harrington, Newport News, VA; Seven grandchildren, Keva Ferrell (Jamaal), Jamon Harrington, Anyel Wright (Rashaan), Shanikwa Harrington, Qumeisha Wilkerson, Lamyre Harrington, and Shatina Townsend; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
