Vern Spohn
1942 - 2024
Vern Spohn was born in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1942. He graduated with distinction from Duquesne University in 1965 and answered the call of duty by joining the U.S. Air Force. For 20 years, he served his country with unwavering devotion and valor, rising to the rank of Major. His time in the AF saw him piloting aircraft and playing a pivotal role as a Forward Air Controller in over 200 combat missions during the intense days of Southeast Asia. His fearless dedication to duty earned him numerous accolades, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and 13 Air Medals. After his honorable retirement in 1986, Vern pursued his passion for knowledge and justice by attending the University of Arizona School of Law_ He then embarked on a successful career as an attorney, practicing law in Albuquerque, NM, and Tucson, AZ. Beyond his professional achievements, Vem was a loving and cherished family man. He is survived by his wife, Debra Stone Spohn, who stood by his side through all of life's adventures. He was a devoted father to his sons, Michael and Nathaniel, and his daughter, Elizabeth Olivas. His daughter Kristin predeceased him, leaving an unfillable void in his heart. Vem will forever be remembered for his courage, integrity, and unwavering dedication to his country, his family, and his principles. His impact on the lives he touched is immeasurable, and his memory will live on through the stories we share and the lessons he imparted. Vern requested that he be interred at Arlington National Cemetery, at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Verres memory to the Fisher House to honor their commitment to servicemembers and their families. May Vern rest in eternal peace, his spirit forever soaring among the skies he once navigated with courage and honor.
