Vern S. Williams

October 30th, 1920 - January 7th, 2014

In memory of Vern S. Williams, born in Tacoma Wa. on Oct. 30, 1920 to Ella Sherrill and William Williams, with an older Sister Doris, and a younger brother Bill. He died on Jan 7, 2014 in Beaverton Or. He was preceded in death by his wife of seventy years, Patricia Williams ne Pravitz, and their oldest daughter Penny Williams, and his sister Doris and brother Bill. He is survived by his children Wendy Meusey and Vern R. Williams and their spouses Jim Meusey and Sandra Williams, and grandchildren Andrew Watt and his wife Jennifer, Matt Williams, Felisha Meusey, Erin Williams and Kiel Williams. After serving with the Seabees in the Pacific during WW II, he returned home and worked for the Bonneville Power Administration for over 40 years, retiring in 1984. Life was not all about work for Vern. He had his children, his grandchildren, and he was very active in his community, working with the Boy Scouts, the Optimist Club, the Tualatin Hills Parks and the Beaverton Planning Commission. He was instrumental in bringing several parks projects to fruition, including the Evelyn M. Schiffler Memorial Park and the Tualatin Hills Nature Park. Many of us will remember Vern and Pat riding in the neighborhood parades in his bright red Barracuda convertible with the top down, weather permitting. Travel was also an important part of life for the Williams family. Vern and Pat visited Australia, Thailand, New Zealand, the South Sea Islands, Japan, Canada and Europe, as well as taking a ‘blue highway’ trip around the US and road trips to Alaska. Now, Vern and Pat are traveling together again through unchartered territories to unknown destinations. May they both travel well. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Vern and Pat Williams Memorial Scholarship Fund at Portland Community College. Both Vern and Pat valued education very highly, making sure their children were educated helping with their grandchildren’s education, and continuing in their own education well into their adulthood. It will be a gift that keeps on giving.

I worked with and met Vern when I first came to the Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District's - Tualatin Hills Nature Park and Nature Park Interpretive Center as the Center Supervisor, trying to get the park and facility open in 1997. Vern served on the Nature Park Advisory Committee. Without Vern there would be not 222-acre Nature Park. He was amazing to work with! :) He always had amazing words of wisdom when he spoke. When he helped out at the native plant sales, you could always count on him helping with loading plants and helping with the dirt pile. Her was always there to lend a hand. :) Vern sponsored me when I joined the Beaverton Optimist Club in 2010 after I retired. He loved his red convertible car!

My friend & Peer, Vern Williams, WWII Navy SeaBee Veteran, Optimist Brother. We have been blessed to have Vern's presence with us for many years. He was a solid man and Patriot Americain in our community. He & Patty (Cookie Lady)gave their wisdom and effort for the benefit of everyone. It is sadness that our comrade has been called from our midst, and gone to report to the Commander of ALL. Father give care and comfort to Vern on his eternal travel, I know he will be looking for Patty.

I will always remember uncle Vern's friendly impish smile and his stories of exploits as a kid roaming the hills around Eatonville and working in the wilds of eastern Washington with the BPA. We will deeply miss our visits.

Aloha Dad. Thanks for everything- your quiet strength, your compassion for all people, your stories and wonderful unprintable phrases, your patience with me, your intellectual curiosity and wisdom, your warmth. Thanks for your love. And mostly thanks for your example of what it is to be a good man and to live life fully. You always have been and always will be, with me daily.

You will always be remembered as the wonderfully optimistic older brother of my father. For two young men who grew up without a father for most of their lives, having lost their father to the flu epidemic in 1925 shortly before my father's birth, you both were the role models of what a father should be. Many links to my heritage are disappearing but you will not be forgotten.

It's hard to say goodbye. I will miss your soothing voice, your mischievous grin, your warm hugs, our satisfying days working in the yard together and much more. Thanks for the privilege of being a part of your life and a part of your family. We miss you, Vern. "Though we need to weep your loss, You dwell in that safe place in our hearts Where no storm or night or pain can reach you. May you continue to inspire us: To enter each day with a generous heart. To serve the call of courage and love."

Uncle Vern was really special to me. I loved so many things about him - his resonant voice, his laugh, his stories, his warmth and wit. I have such fond memories of family time spent with him and Aunt Patty. Their marriage and companionship were really something special. To this day I can't smell pipe smoke without thinking of Uncle Vern. He will be missed but will always live on in our hearts. So blessed to have been part of his extended family!

We will always remember Vern and Patty as two of the nicest people we have ever known. Growing up as neighbors, we envied Vern's garden. Patty was always baking cookies and sewing. We are glad to have seen Vern one last time in January 2012.
