Veronica Ingrid Antonie Yates Veronica Ingrid Antonie Yates died peacefully with her daughter and family on the 29th of January 2019 in University Place, Washington after an unexpected terminal diagnosis of metastatic pancreatic cancer. She was previously a resident of Ya-Po-Ah Terrace in Eugene, Oregon and shared friendships with residents and staff throughout her tenure there. She was predeceased by her mother, Sophie Anna Hersey (stepfather Carl Dayton Hersey), and father, Richard Ziervogel. Veronica is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Ann Pikul, son-in-law, Shawn, and grandchildren, Emily Marie and Jeffrey Thomas; treasured cousin in Germany, Renate Counen (Jürgen) and other distant relatives in Germany. Personal Life Veronica Ingrid Antonie Yates was born Ingrid Antonie Bosacki in Stuttgart, Germany to Sophie Anna Bosacki and Richard Ziervogel on September 28, 1945. She came to the United States with her mother in 1949. She was a graduate of McDowell High School (June of 1963) and attended Gannon College, majoring in Psychology (1966-1967) in Erie, Pennsylvania. She visited family briefly in Germany in 1969 and then returned to the United States. Veronica was married to Jeffrey William Yates (1963), deceased in 2011 and father to Kimberly; Stanley Smith Patterson (1973) and Mark Paxton Brewer (1979). She was baptized by a Catholic priest in Stuttgart-Waiblingen, West Germany in September of 1945 with her First Holy Communion in May of 1953. Veronica rediscovered her connection to the Catholic church in 1988 after a 30-day silent, Jesuit retreat in Los Altos, California. Veronica was a parishioner at St. Mary Catholic Church in Eugene, Oregon. Although Veronica was a very private person, she developed some cherished friendships over the years, James, Bonnita, Barbara, Nan, Sharon and Kathy to name a few, and had a great appreciation for National Public Radio (NPR), meaningful movies, powerful documentaries and heart-pounding music. She was an avid reader of fiction, non-fiction and poetry. She appreciated direct and honest communication, was on the left-side of political thinking and valued her Catholic faith. She expressed great love and adoration to her grandchildren and often spouted her pride of their accomplishments and life goals to all who would listen. Veronica was very blessed to fulfill one of her lifelong, childhood dreams when she became a horse owner in the late 1990's and spent time in Azalea, Oregon riding and caring for two Peruvian Paso horses. She later moved to Eugene, Oregon and purchased an American Saddlebred named "Buggs." In August of 2000, Veronica rode Sonja's Desire to the Western Country Pleasure Championships at the C Fair Charity Horse Show and won a Champion ribbon thanks to training at Far Niente Stables in Pleasant Hill, Oregon. She also shared her love of animals with a colorful variety of birds, kittens and puppies over the years. A few of her favorite pets included Caeser and Sir Ruhn, both German Shepherds, Lily, a Samoyed, and three boisterous Himalayan cats, Bozzie, Tortie Schmeckels and Roxanne. In more recent years, Veronica was drawn back to writing, more specifically, poetry. Veronica was a member of the Oregon State Poetry Association (2010) and dedicated her whole heart into writings about her perceptions of the past, present and what the future may hold. Before her passing, she was working on transitioning her granddaughter's 8th grade poem, "I Am," into a song, "Stubborn Girl," that currently remains unfinished. Biography and Work History Veronica was a writer by choice, a journalist, columnist and editor by experience, and a poet by inescapability. She lived in Eugene, Oregon where she found joyful satisfaction in turning her attention daily toward the miracles in the everyday of things. Veronica wrote professionally on diverse subjects from industrial products to horse show ad campaigns to preparing presentations for nonfiction authors for over 20 years. She classified herself as a generalist when it came to writing, although she served some highly specific industrial market niches. From newsletter and technical copywriting to nonfiction and fiction, she liked the freedom of not being pinned down and thoroughly enjoyed learning and writing about many different subjects. Veronica also wrote "How To Write Poetry and Get It Published -- A Guide for Emerging Poets" edited by Robert W. Bly, 2007, published by the Center for Technical Communications, Dumont, NJ. As a former journalist, columnist and editor, Veronica worked for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, Sarasota Journal, Cocoa TODAY and Tampa Tribune, Sarasota Town and County Magazine, among other publications in Florida from 1972 to 1980. She owned her own advertising and public relations firm in Burlingame, CA, placed numerous feature articles for clients in relevant trade magazines, created ad campaigns, developed and produced a full range of corporate collateral materials and plotted yearly marketing and advertising schedules for clients such as GTE Wesgo Technical Ceramics and Brazing Alloys. She also launched her own online copywriting service in 2006 (Hummingbird Works, Fine Writing on the Fly). A partial list of clients served over her professional career included Fujitsu Business Systems, Marianist Conference Center, Real Times Trust, Mercy Center, Santa Clara County Drug Abuse Services Bureau, Far Niente Stables, Connections Therapeutic Riding Program, and Nan Phifer, author, Memoirs of the Soul, A Writing Guide and presenter of Writing to the Center workshops. She was a member of the Business Marketing Association. Veronica's poems appeared in the Syracuse Cultural Workers annual publication, Women Artists Datebook, Rosebud magazine, Writers' Journal, Lucidity Poetry Journal. She was also selected as a poetry finalist in the Pacific Northwest Association Literary contest; designated a semi-finalist in the Katherine Anne Porter Prize for Fiction in the Nimrod/Hardman Competition, and a prize winner in the 2006 Artists Embassy International Dancing Poetry Festival in San Francisco.
