Virgil “Dug” Hayes Dugger, Jr. Virgil “Dug” Dugger, Jr. age 82, passed Friday, August 18, 2023 surrounded by his family. Born Virgil Hayes Dugger, Jr. in Jacksonville, FL to Virgil Hayes Dugger, Sr. and Belva McLean Dugger July 14, 1941. He was a graduate of Landon High School Jacksonville, FL Class of ’59 and earned his BS in Electrical Engineering from David Lipscomb University and The University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1964. He moved his family to Charleston, SC in December of 1965 where he began a career as an electrical engineer and civil servant for the United States Department of the Navy at the Charleston Naval Shipyard responsible for the design, construction, and maintenance of military communication systems. He later continued his career with Naval Electronics Systems Engineering Center Charleston (NAVALEX) and the latter Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) prior to his retirement. His hobbies were varied including composing/organizing music, playing guitar, piano, and keyboard; lead guitarist in the Rock a Billy band the Dum-be-Doobies; building remote controlled airplanes; riding dirt bikes; and visiting as many of the SC State Parks he could. He was a longtime member of the Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Jacqueline Joy Johnstone Dugger of North Charleston, SC; four children, Jeffrey Alan Dugger (LeAnn) of Columbia, SC; Brian Wayne Dugger (Julie) of Suwanee, GA; Sara Dugger Turgeon (Doug) of Anderson, SC; and Rebecca Dugger Brown of North Charleston, SC; five grandchildren, Allison Lee Dugger of Columbia, SC; Alan Thomas Dugger of Rock Hill, SC; Emily Paige Dugger Riney (Wyatt) of Marietta, GA; Beasley Claire Turgeon of Anderson, SC; and Lucas Del Rey Brown of Charleston, SC; one great grandchild, Penelope Carper Riney; and his sister, Donna Dugger Harwell of Overland Park, KS. Friends and family are invited to attend the memorial service held Saturday, August 26, 2023, 11AM at the Summerville Church of Christ, 413 Old Trolley Rd. Summerville, SC 29485. Refreshments will be served in the fellowship hall immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Charleston ASPCA and Wounded Warriors Project.
