Vonda Davis
March 1st, 1923 - September 10th, 2016
Kingsport - Vonda Stallard Dorton Davis, 93 of Kingsport, (formerly of Rye Cove, VA) went to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at Holston Manor in Kingsport following a long illness. She dropped out of public school at an early age but later completed her high school education and received an Associate of Arts degree from Campbellsville College, KY. She spoke often of her tremendous love and high regard for Campbellsville. She completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at Milligan College. Vonda taught elementary school for 38 years in the Scott County, VA schools; she spent the majority of those years at Rye Cove Elementary School. She retired in 1988. Vonda loved children and cherished her time spent in the classroom. For more than 50 years, Vonda taught Sunday school at Stanleytown Community Church and Durhams Chapel Church. She was dedicated not only to her public school teaching but also to her church as well. She loved music and sang with several different quartets. Her strong faith and beliefs were a positive influence on her family, friends, students and anyone she met. One of Vonda's unique talents was her ability to quilt. The beauty of those quilts can be seen as a result of her handiwork. She was also an excellent cook. Vonda was preceded in death by her parents, John A. and Nannie Carter Stallard; her first husband, Staff Sgt. Bobbie Dorton, who was killed in World War II; stepmother, Bessie Carter Stallard; grandson, Graham Davis; brother, Jim Stallard; sisters, June Stallard Starnes, Lois Stallard Carter and Nelle Stallard; and infant sisters, Agnes Stallard and Virginia Stallard. Survivors include her husband Cecil Davis; son Roger Davis (Jackie); grandson Jackson Davis, Kingsport, TN; sisters, Verna Stallard Dorton, Big Stone Gap, VA, Pauline Stallard, Patsy Nunley, Kingsport; Christine (Earl) Leonard, Centerburg, OH; brothers, Leonard Stallard, Weber City, VA, Jack Stallard, Larry Stallard (Jan), Darrell Stallard (Ginger), Kingsport; sister-in-law, Jewell Stallard, Wellington, OH; special cousins and friends, Marlene Carter Kindle, Lori Kindle and Frank Kindle. Vonda was blessed with a large family of loving brothers and sisters and a host of "special" nephews and nieces and many good friends. Visitation of friends will be held at Scott County Funeral Home on Tuesday, Sept. 13 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Stanleytown Community Church, Duffield, VA on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 2 p.m. The Rev. Larry Stallard will conduct the service. Music will be provided by Pat Davis Jr. and Jack Stallard. Hymns will be sung by the congregation. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to service. Interment will be at Hall Cemetery, Stanleytown, following the service. Pallbearers will be the Men's Sunday school class of Stanleytown Community Church and Jeff Davis. In lieu of flowers, the family requests your memorial gifts go to Stanleytown Community Church, c/o Mrs. Jo Dingus, 4099 Rye Cove Memorial Rd., Duffield, VA 24244. The family would like to express special thanks to the professional staff at Wellmont Medical Center and Holston Manor for their kind and compassionate care.
