"Three Rivers - Walter J. Lopata, 85, passed away unexpectedly on January 12, 2015 at Baystate Medical Center. Born November 25, 1929 in Wilbraham , he was the son of Thomas and Mary Milewska Lopata. Growing up in Wilbraham, Walter has lived in the Three Rivers section of Palmer for the past 56 years. He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. He retired as a master mechanic from Hamilton Standard after many years of service. Walter was an active member and Treasurer at AMVETS in Three Rivers, and also ran their pitch league. He also enjoyed horseshoes and golf. He will be dearly missed by his daughter, Linda McGrath and her husband Jonathan of Duxbury, MA, and his daughter Cynthia Dupre, with whom he lived. He also leaves two grandchildren, Kinsley McGrath and Ashley McGrath along with a great granddaughter Britt Minella. Being one of ten children, his sister, Grace Schabowski of Westfield survives him. Visitation will be held Thursday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Beers & Story Palmer Funeral Home with a Mass Friday at 10:00 a.m. at Divine Mercy Parish and burial in Four Corners Cemetery. For those wishing, friends and family may gather between 9-9:15 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jimmy Fund. For details, please visit www.beersandstory.com."
