Walter "Walt" Louis Thies
May 27th, 1931 - October 31st, 2013
Walter Louis (Walt) Thies, 82, of Greensboro, died Thursday, October 31, 2013 at Select Specialty Hospital. A private graveside service will be held Wednesday at Forest Lawn Cemetery, with the Reverend Mitch Wilson officiating. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday morning, November 16, at 11:00 am at Centenary United Methodist Church in Greensboro. Mr. Thies was born on May 27, 1931, in Cordova, Nebraska to Sigmund Carl and Emelie Bartens Thies. The youngest of 8 children, Mr. Thies graduated from the United States Naval Academy after which he served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Mr. Thies also received his Masters in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He retired from Guilford County Schools where he was employed as a Systems Engineer. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Wanda Oxner Thies; daughter Susan Thies Lee of Greensboro, son Eric Thies and wife Laura Yordy of Harrisonburg, Virginia, daughter Mary Ann Thies Smith and husband Robert Smith of Summerfield, and grandchildren Meredith Lee, Emily and Isaac Smith, and Eli and Owen Thies. Memorials may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, 2300 W. Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27403
