Wayne Elmer Hilton was born in Tacoma, Washington, to Robert and Bertha Hilton on June 26, 1946 and passed away on March 10, 2020 after a very sudden illness. Wayne grew up in Steilacoom, and was in the first graduating class of Lakes High School. After high school, he graduated from both, Clover Park Technical College and Pierce College. The Navy was next on his mind and he joined on May 25, 1966, as an Electronics Technician, specializing in communications. He served three tours in Viet Nam aboard the USS Valley Forge with additional shore duties. While in the Navy he was awarded The Viet Nam Service Medal, earning both the Silver and Bronze Stars; the Silver Star being personally awarded by then President Jimmy Carter. Upon his honorable discharge, Wayne joined the Naval Reserve, where he served until his retirement after 20 years. Subsequent to his Navy career, he continued in communications at ATT, PNW Bell/US West for the next 31 years; he was very active in the local union and was past President of the local Communication Workers of America. In retirement he kept busy. He was a certified Master Gardner, owned a landscaping company, became a certified scuba diver (which he loved to enjoy on their many vacations in Hawaii), and sold Florian Tools and Solar Gem Greenhouses at fairs throughout the country. Additionally from 2012 to the day he fell ill, Wayne was proudly involved in Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), where he has helped thousands of guardsmen and reservists fulfill their military obligations, and helped recognize employers who support our servicemen and women. For this effort, Wayne has been presented with many awards from ESGR over the years for his dedication. Wayne leaves behind his wife of 43 years, Mary, and four children: son Anthony (Maryellen) Hilton, UT; daughters: Cheryl (Robert) Provard, UT, Marne Patterson and Michelle Morris, both of WA; six grandchildren: Faith and Kaitlyn Hilton, Matt, Cameron and Camille Provard, and CJ Patterson. Surviving siblings are: Wesley (Terri) Hilton, WA and Joni Marie (Jimmy) Phares, TX; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, and a brother, Ed Allen. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at a later date.
