Wilford "Buz" Hamilton Fawcett, III
January 8th, 1933 - June 30th, 2024
Wilford Hamilton “Buz” Fawcett III, 91, a longtime resident of Owyhee County, passed away June 30, 2024. He was born January 8, 1933, in Wichita, Kansas, and spent his early childhood on a ranch in Colorado.
Buz enjoyed many wonderful experiences during his lifetime. He graduated from Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana, then attended Tulane University in Louisiana.
He served two years in the Army. Following his time in the Army, he signed on to the crew of the Brigantine Yankee for its seventh world voyage as an underwater photographer. During the ship’s 17-month voyage, National Geographic photographers joined the crew as they arrived at Pitcairn Island. Buz was the diver who first located the anchor of the famous HMS Bounty, on which the motion picture “Mutiny on the Bounty” was based.
Buz later served as Associate Editor of Sports Afield magazine and as Editor of Guns and Ammo magazine. He contributed articles to many outdoor magazines.
Buz owned and operated Buz Fawcett’s Wingshooting Workshop located in the Boise-Kuna area and authored the book “Instinctive Shooting: The Making of a Master Gunner.”
He was a member of American Legion Post 128 in Marsing.
Buz was a dear friend and will be greatly missed. Deepest thanks go to the staff at Owyhee Health & Rehabilitation Center for their wonderful care.
