January 20th, 1931 - August 10th, 2024

### Obituary for Willa Mae Bigej Willa Mae Bigej (née Hawkins), born on January 20, 1931, in Seiling, Oklahoma, peacefully passed away on August 10, 2024, in Lake Grove, Oregon. Willa, a beloved sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, has left behind a legacy of love, curiosity, and joyous memories that will be cherished by all who knew her. Willa's early years were spent in Oklahoma until the age of twelve when her family moved to Oregon. She graduated from Gresham High School in 1949 and embarked on a journey filled with personal and communal accomplishments. Willa was cherished by her preschool students in Boise, Idaho, and Madras, Oregon, where she devoted her time and energy to nurturing young minds. Willa's life was marked by vibrant interests and pursuits. She reveled in the simple joys of time spent at her beach cabin, playing Pinochle, sewing, and square-dancing. Her presence was known to light up any room, and her humor and curiosity left an indelible mark on everyone’s heart. Willa enjoyed the love and companionship of her husband, Richard Bigej, with whom she shared 44 beautiful years until his passing in 1997. She later found happiness again with Wesley Pendergraft of Madras, Oregon, enjoying another 17 wonderful years together until Wes’ death in 2020. Willa's enduring spirit is carried on by her loving daughters: Susan Backenstos, Carla Gardella (Chris), and Tamara Owen (Kevin). She is also survived by her sister, Laverta Eblen (Leroy), her five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Willa was preceded in death by her parents, Hardy and Flora Hawkins, her brother HB Hawkins, and her sisters Evaughn Cook and JoAnn Ball. In honor of Willa's wishes, no formal services will be held. She chose to be cremated and inurned in her niche next to Richard's in Oregon City, a testament to their enduring bond. Her family and friends will forever hold her memory in their hearts, celebrating her life full of curiosity, energy, and unwavering humor. Though her physical presence will be deeply missed, Willa Mae Bigej’s spirit will continue to inspire and bring joy to the lives she touched. May she rest in peace.
