William "Bill" Alan Brandes, Sr.

February 16th, 1932 - August 17th, 2024

"Faith, Family, Friends"

William Brandes, Sr., a man of immense grace, unwavering faith, and quiet dignity, passed away peacefully on August 17th, 2024, in the company of loved ones to join his Lord. Bill left behind a profound legacy that will endure in the hearts of those who knew him. His influence as a husband, father, leader, and friend touched countless lives, and his memory will be cherished forever.

Born on February 16, 1932, in Portland, Oregon, Bill came into the world in the same hospital as the love of his life, Sally Brandes. Together, they shared 69 wonderful years of marriage. Bill’s early years saw him move with his family to Anchorage, Alaska, where he began his education before being evacuated to Tempe, Arizona, with his mother during World War II. He later completed his schooling in Walla Walla, Washington, before attending Whitman College, where he earned a letter in track and field. He went on to graduate from Oregon State University with a degree in Civil Engineering. Bill was a proud brother of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

Bill’s career was marked by extraordinary achievements, particularly during his time with Bechtel. He managed large-scale engineering projects around the world, including in South Africa, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. He led teams of thousands of engineers, overseeing the construction of complex hydro, civil, and nuclear projects. Bill’s expertise and leadership made a lasting impact on global infrastructure.

In addition to his work with Bechtel, Bill founded and served as president of his own company, Brandes Construction. He also served as president of the Victor Valley College Foundation, contributing significantly to the growth and development of his community.

Bill’s commitment to service began early in life. He served in the National Guard, ROTC, and the Army Reserve, and obtained the rank of Captain upon discharge. His sense of duty extended beyond his military service to his community and his church. Bill gave his life to Christ in 1942 and was deeply devoted to his faith. He sang in the men’s choir and volunteered at Shepherd of the Hills Church, where he made a lasting impact on his congregation.

An avid golfer, Bill achieved the rare feat of scoring three hole-in-ones, a testament to his skill and passion for the game. He approached life with the same determination and joy, leaving behind a legacy of love and leadership.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Sally Brandes; his son, Bill Jr., and his wife, Mary; daughter, Kathryn, and her husband, Chris. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: John and his wife, Melody; Mike; Effie; Amy and her husband, Nathan; Jena and her husband, Tyler; Liana and her husband, EJ; and brother-in-law Clif. Additionally, Bill was blessed with great-granddaughters Elizabeth, Marley, Autumn, and Aubree, and great-grandsons Timothy, Thomas, and William.
