William "Bill, Poppy, Pap" Edward Cortazzo

William E. Cortazzo October 21, 1943 – May 26, 2024, In the early morning of May 26, 2024, William, “Bill, Poppy, Pap” Cortazzo passed away at home in North Charleston, SC. Our legend was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1943. He is preceded in death by his beloved mom, Virginia, his sisters Trisha and Deb, his great granddaughter Chloe and his cousin and best friend Frankie. He is survived by his loving wife Kim (Kimi or our favorite gdk-iykyk). His daughters Chris (Jim) Ayala, Pam (AJ) Brandon, Kim (Butch) Frantz and Landon. Grandchildren Rob (Emily), Amber (Ambercakes-Brett), Erica (JT), Ben, Jessica (Nate), Evan (Maiya), Austin (Jesse), Owen, Aidan, and Emerson (Sis). Great grandchildren, Parker, Emma, Naomi, Norah, Fitz, and Eliana. Sister-in-law and brother-in-law Heather and Craig Mallard. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Bill (Poppy, Pap) lived an adventurous life. After high school he enlisted in the Air Force and proudly served his country for four years. After the military he joined the transportation industry and became an owner/operator trucker. Even at 80 years old, he was still driving his rig up until four weeks before his passing. His friend Mr. Carl helped him out tremendously over the last couple of months, so he was able to “Keep on Truckin”!

I am a lion, I shall not waver, the easy way out is not an option. “Just do it Bill’s way”.

“Just close your eyes and think of me. Yes, and soon I will be there to brighten up oh even the darkest nights. Just call out my name and you know wherever I am, I’ll come running to see you again”. You’ve Got a Friend – by James Taylor

Once he met you, you were always a friend. Till we meet again. It’s never a goodbye, but always a see you later. Later in the year, there will be a Celebration of Life in Pittsburgh, PA.

As far back as my memories go, you are there. Always my Dad’s best friend, always my Uncle, always Family. The memories I will hold dear my entire life. As a small child, playing with Christine while you and my Dad looked on. Out riding my bike at 10 years old in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, seeing your semi in the parking lot, and racing home to see you (and often, Kim). All you can eat crab legs at Red Lobster. The summer we spent running the snocone truck, and the ticket I got for vending without a license (and telling you how I had to explain that ticket when I got my security clearance for the Navy). My sons getting to meet you and calling you Uncle too. You, me, and Hank on the boat out on Lake Erie. So many memories. I laughed at your stories my whole life, as you handed out smiles and laughter like they were candy. You were larger than life is some ways, especially to me as a child, and yet you were one of the most approachable persons to me, especially as an adult. No one was quicker to help than you. I loved (and love) you with all of my heart Uncle Bill. The world already feels smaller without you here. Say hi to my Pops for me, and I’ll see you on the other side. Thank you for everything. Love, Del

I think I’m still processing this a little. I am so relieved that you are no longer in pain. That is a blessing, but damn am I going to miss our conversations. The man the myth the legend! That sums you up! You did things your way! You had a quick temper, but a big heart that always had room for another friend. You imparted so much wisdom on anyone you encountered and I am grateful that I scored many front row seats with you! I am honored and privileged to have had you as my Unc! Until we meet again, rest easy and keep the rest of the bests in check! Love you, Your Oldest Niece Sherry :)
