William Patrick Doherty Ph.D., M.D. "Bill", 75, passed away at Enloe Hospital in Chico, CA on July 29, 2018 after a bicycle accident. Dr. Doherty was born to Joseph and Kathleen Doherty on December 21, 1942 in London, Ontario, Canada. He was the first of five children, two brothers and two sisters, who were raised in Guelph, Ontario. He received the W.S. Wilson Medal for graduating first in Civil Engineering with a B.A. Sc. from the University of Toronto in 1965. He went on to attend UC Berkeley and graduated with a Masters and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering in 1971. In 1976, he received his M.D. from UC San Francisco and was elected into Alpha Omega Alpha, the national honor society for medical students. After graduation in 1976, he finished an internship in Internal Medicine and a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery. He was then on staff and a clinical instructor at San Francisco General Hospital where he completed a fellowship in Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery. He moved to Colorado and met his wife, Candy, while he was on staff at Denver General Hospital and an assistant professor at University of Colorado Medical Center. Later they moved to Minnesota where he finished a fellowship in Adult Reconstructive Surgery at the Mayo Clinic. During his schooling and training, he contributed to many publications. On the completion of his medical training in 1985, William and Candice chose Chico as the community in which they would raise their family and where he would practice Orthopaedic Surgery at Orthopedic Associates of Northern California (OANC), Chico Community Hospital and Enloe Hospital. In 2010, he began to also work as a Qualified Medical Evaluator for workers' compensation cases. He helped develop the Orthopaedic Services at the Veterans Affairs (VA) in Chico. Currently, he was working at OANC and the VA. "Dr. D" truly loved what he did helping patients and being a part of the medical community. In his private time, Bill was an extremely passionate bicyclist calling himself the "weekend warrior", riding Chico's Wildflower in the spring and Cycle Oregon in the fall; he trained for both rides year round. He enjoyed traveling to Canada, Nebraska, Alaska, and many other places with his family. In addition, he enjoyed outdoor walks/hikes, sporting events (Cal Bears, SF 49ers, Golden State Warriors, SF Giants and San Jose Sharks), wood carving and investing. Everything he did, hobbies included, was at 110%. He is survived by Candice Doherty, his wife of 35 years; daughters, Jennifer Whipple Doherty (Los Gatos, CA), Lauren Isaacson (Boca Raton, FL), and Erynn Doherty (Walnut Creek, CA); grandsons, Wylder Whipple (14), Patrick Isaacson (2), and Baby Isaacson (due November 2018); brother, Ed Doherty; sisters, Maureen Doherty and Donna Doherty Lozon. He was proceeded in death by his brother Paul Doherty. A Celebration of Life will be held at Enloe Conference Center on Saturday, August 11, 2018 beginning at 1:00 p.m. with refreshments to follow ending at 3:00 p.m. All family, friends, co-workers, and patients are welcome. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or charity of your choice, in care of the Brusie Funeral Home, 626 Broadway, Chico, CA 95926 (www.brusiefh.com).
