William T. Mayer
November 16th, 1932 - August 16th, 2024
William T. Mayer, 91, died August 16, 2024. Bill was born on November 16, 1932 in Yonkers to Marie Konrad and Thomas L. Mayer. Bill graduated from Gorton HS in Yonkers. He received an Associate Degree from Westchester Community College and a Bachelor’s Degree from Oswego, a Master’s Degree from Columbia University. He also attended NYU, the University of Connecticut, SUNY New Paltz, and College of New Rochelle.
Bill began his Teaching career as an Assistant Professor at SUNY Oswego. He wanted to teach at a more challenging level, so he taught in the Tarrytown Schools for 33 years. While teaching, he was also the District Audio Visual Director, Baseball Coach at Washington Irving Junior HS, was the Section 1 Chairman for Modified Baseball, as well as Chairman of the NYS Public High School Athletic Association for Modified Baseball. His love of sports brought him to coach for the Colts Boys Club in Yonkers and the North Rockland Girls Athletic League.
Bill served as a Staff Sergeant with the 3rd Armored Calvary Regiment during the Korean War. He continued loving the military by serving as Adjutant, was elected Honorary Life Member and was Post Commander of Leo Laders American Legion Post 130 Thiells NY. Bill was also a member of the Korean War Veterans Eagle Chapter, AMVETS, and served as Chairman of Selective Service Local Board 102. On May 19, 2018, he was on the Hudson Valley Honor Flight 20 to Washington DC.
Bill received an Award from the Elks National Veteran’s Service for writing a monthly article (The Veteran’s Corner) that was distributed throughout NYS. He was also appointed to serve as a National VAVS Representative at FDR VA Medical Center Montrose. Bill was the Chairman of the Town of Haverstraw Memorial Day Committee and Veterans Day Services for Leo Laders American Legion.
Bill was a Life Member of Haverstraw Elks Lodge 877. During his tenure he was Chairman of the Trustees, Scholarship Chair and Veterans Chair, Committees. He was elected Citizen of the Year in February 2007 by the Haverstraw Elks for North Rockland. He also was awarded the NYS Elks Veteran of the Year for 2016-2017. Bill was also very active at the Marian Shrine Stony Point, St. Gregory’s Church Garnerville and West Haverstraw Senior Club.
He was predeceased by his Wife, Helen Tighe Mayer, Parents Marie and Thomas Mayer, Brother Thomas Mayer Jr, Sister-in-Law Pat Mayer and Nephew Thomas Mayer 3.
He is survived by his Daughter, Teresa Mayer and Joe DePalma, West Haverstraw, Daughter Patrica and Jeff Canger, Lutz Florida, Son Michael Mayer, Deerfield Beach, Florida; Four Grandchildren Alyssa and Christine Canger, Hailey and Christopher Mayer and Great Grandson Dominik; Nieces Janet McHenry and Lorraine Nardi, Nephew Daniel Mayer. Special Thank you to Rev. Warren Brandt for being a true friend and always being there for Bill.
Family and friends will be received at TJ McGowan Sons Funeral Home 71 Central Hwy. Garnerville on Sat. 24 and Sun. 25 from 2-4PM and 7-9PM. A Christian Mass of Burial will be celebrated Monday 26 at 11:00 AM, St. Gregory Barbarigo Church 25 Cinder Road Garnerville.
Burial will follow at Frederick Loescher Memorial Veterans Cemetery 220 Brick Church Road Spring Valley.
