William Simon Moody
May 21st, 1921 - September 28th, 2016
William "Bill" Simon Moody, age 95, of Charlotte, NC, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at White Oak Manor of Charlotte. He was the beloved son of the late William Alexander Moody and Alta Mae Drum Moody. Bill was born and raised in Binghamton, NY, and moved to Charlotte, NC in the 1970's to help coordinate the opening of IBM's new facility. He started his work career with IBM in New York as a services manager. When he moved to Charlotte, he was in charge of tool distribution for the model shop. He retired as a stock room attendant after 44 years of dedicated service to IBM. Bill served his country during WWII in the 5th Fighter Command as a Mess Sergeant in the US Army Air Corp. where he received a Bronze Star. He was stationed in the South Pacific. He was a 32nd degree Mason and Shriner while living in New York. Bill had a lifelong love for music. He played the trumpet and E flat alto horn. Beginning in his teens, he played in the Salvation Army Band and became the deputy bandmaster. He was a student conductor in the Binghamton High School band. Through the years, Bill was the assistant band conductor for the IBM band in Endicott, NY and the Kahlura Shrine band in Binghamton, NY. He played in the Maine Community Band and the Calvary Baptist Tabernacle Orchestra in NY. After moving to Charlotte, he became a member of the Hickory Grove Baptist Church Orchestra. He also sang in the church choir and was a member of the Thomas Moore Sunday School class. Even at the age of 93, he continued to play his horn for the residents while living at Summit Place of Charlotte. William is survived by his wife of 21 years, Doris Melson Bryan Moody; his son, Charles Moody and his wife, Eugenie of Matthews, NC; his daughter, Cynthia Adams and her husband, Stephen Adams of Yuba City, CA; stepson, Stephen Bryan of Durham, NC, and Timothy Bryan and his wife, Faith of Indian Trail, NC. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Eleanor H. Green Moody, who passed away in 1993, his sister, Beatrice Moody Lane, and his great-granddaughter, Erin Moody in 2015. Funeral services for Bill will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 3, 2016 at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Monday. Interment will follow immediately at Sunset Memory Gardens, Charlotte, NC, where Army Military Honors will be presented by his grandson, Staff Sergeant Michael Moody.
