William L. “Coach Bill” Powell, Sr. - Titusville - Bill has gone to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, September 9, 2012. He was born on October 15, 1931 in Anniston, Alabama and moved to Miami, Florida in 1939. Bill grew up in Miami and moved to Brevard County in 1966. He attended Miami Senior High School and graduated in 1952. He was drafted in the U.S. Army in 1952 where he served a two year term with the American Security Association as a Morse Code Operator. Upon his military discharge in 1954, he moved to Cutler Ridge, Florida where he worked as a firefighter for the Miami Fire Department. In 1966, Bill relocated his family to Rockledge, Florida where he worked as a building superintendent. In 1971 Bill took a job at Titusville High School where he taught Building Trades/Masonry. Along with his Building Trades position, he was also asked to start a Wrestling Program at Titusville High School where he continued to coach wresting and baseball upon his retirement in 1986. Bill loved sports. He played high school baseball and was an outstanding player. Throughout his life he enjoyed coaching, watching ball games and NASCAR. In 1994, Bill was elected on the Brevard County School Board and served a total of eight (8) years before retiring in 2002. He served as the Chairman on the Brevard County School board from 1996-1998. In 1995 he took a job working for SDB Engineers & Constructors, INC, working at the Kennedy Space Center until 2005. He also loved to volunteer his time serving on Country Acres Board, Brevard County Parks & Recreation Board and the Brevard County Value Adjustment Board (just to name a few). Bill's life was changed forever when he met his wife, Helen. Together they have seven children. William L. Powell Jr. (Toni Powell) of Titusville, David L. Powell of Titusville, Cindy M. Parrott of Titusville, Patti J. Powell of Rockledge, Richard Evangelista (Joan Evangelista) of Titusville, Donna Faenza (John Faenza) of Titusville, Tonya Witt (Billy Witt) of Titusville. Together they were blessed with thirteen (13) grandchildren and twenty (20) great grandchildren. Bill is survived by his sisters, Sarah “Tot” Mastay (Denis Mastay, Linda Simpson (Jerry Simpson) and brother Richard Powell (Sandy Powell) along with many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Bill was predeceased in life by his father, Lloyd, mother, Lilly Mae and his beloved son, William L. Powell, JR. Services will be held in Bill's honor at Park Avenue Baptist Church, 2600 S. Park Avenue in Titusville on Saturday, September 15th, 2012. Viewing will be from 11 a.m. to 12:45 noon, with a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Bill requested that donations be made to: William L Powell, Sr. Scholarship Fund, Brevard Community College Foundation, Inc., 1519 Clearlake Road, Cocoa, FL 32922 OR to Titusville High School, ATTN: THS Boosters Club, 150 Terrier Trail North, Titusville, FL 32780.
