William Walter Straub, III
May 12th, 1940 - May 28th, 2018
William “Bill” Straub passed away peacefully at the Life Path Hospice House in Sun City Center, Florida, on Monday, May 28, at the age of 78. Born in Newport, Kentucky, Bill attended Highlands High School in Ft. Thomas and was an All-NKAC quarterback during his junior and senior years. His 1957 team went undefeated and won the Kentucky State Championship. Bill went on to play football at both the University of Kentucky and Western Kentucky University and spent the majority of his life dedicated to the game. He coached at several Kentucky high schools, at Edinboro State College in Pennsylvania, and most successfully served for 25 years as a coach at Moeller High School in Cincinnati during its reign as a football dynasty in the 70’s and 80’s, winning seven State Championships and five National Championships. Bill also taught biology for many years at Boone County High School in Florence, Kentucky. After retirement, Bill moved to Sun City Center to fulfill his dream of living in a warm climate and playing golf, which he did until the onset of Alzheimer’s in 2015 limited his ability to remain active. In 2016, Bill was inducted into the Highlands High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Bill touched the lives of so many as a teammate, a teacher, a coach, and a friend. He is survived by his daughter, Sara. No memorial service is planned but a donation can be made in his honor to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org.
