William B. Townsend
March 27th, 1910 - September 25th, 2005
Mr. William B. Townsend, 95, formerly of Church St., Amsterdam passed away Sunday afternoon at Montgomery Meadows in Amsterdam where he had been a resident. Born on March 27, 1910 in Round Lake, NY he was the son of Louis and Sarah Mary Beyer Townsend. He was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools. During World War II Mr. Townsend proudly served as a staff sergeant with the United States Army, serving in the European and Pacific Theater. He was a member of the Amsterdam United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Amvets of Ft. Hunter. Before and after the war Mr. Townsend worked in the carpet mills in Amsterdam until going to work for General Electric in Schenectady until his retirement in 1975. Survivors include his brother, Louis G. Townsend of Ft. Johnson; 2 sister in-laws, Ruth Townsend of Ft. Johnson, and Islay Townsend of Johnstown, NY and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, NY with the Rev. Brian Gould officiating. The burial will take place in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Tribes Hill. Calling Hours will be on Tuesday from 5 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the United Methodist Church care of the funeral home.
