Willie Self Query Jewell Mrs. Jewell, 89, of the Cypress Club of Charlotte, passed away early Sunday morning, January 23, 2011, surrounded by her beloved family after a long illness. Mrs. Jewell was born in Hickory, N.C. on May 2, 1921, daughter of Etta Clarissa May and Ralph Arney Self, Sr. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Ralph Self, Jr., sister, Martha Jane Thomason, her first husband J. H. ?Doc? Query in 1977, and by second husband Randolph Jefferson Jewell in 1991. Mrs. Jewell is survived by daughters, Susan Query Bratton of Charlotte, NC and Jan Query Jordan and husband, Frank of Woodbridge, VA.; grandson, Elliott Jordan and his wife, Elizabeth; granddaughter, Elizabeth Jordan and husband Nick, of Lake Placid, NY; great-granddaughter, Verity Grace of Richmond, VA and grand-dog, Emma. Mrs. Jewell grew up in Hickory, N.C. where she graduated from Hickory High School and Lenoir Rhyne College. During her life she was blessed with many opportunities. She worked for Spainhour?s and Belk?s in Hickory, NC while in college, the SC State Board of Health, the American Red Cross and along with her husband ?Doc?, co-owned and taught at the Evans-Carolina Business College in Charlotte, NC. Mrs. Jewell served as President of the Charlotte Jr. Women?s Club, organized and served as President of the first SC Junior Women?s Club in Columbia, SC, Director and President of the Congaree Girl Scout Council in SC, Director of the SC Federation of Woman?s Clubs, and was selected Outstanding Woman of the Year in Columbia, SC. She also belonged to the ?Fridi? and ?Whatzit? clubs in Charlotte. She was a charter member of Myers Park Baptist Church, and former member of Carmel Country Club and the Blowing Rock Country Club. Throughout her life, Mrs. Jewell was an avid golfer, bridge player, and jitter bugger. She was a lover of people who never met a stranger and looked for the teachable moments in life. In her last days, she even gave instructions to the nurse in charge of her care on how to putt, ending with ?and remember to always keep your head down?. She was filled with compassion, convictions, and an invincible ability to always keep ?her head up?. She was dearly loved by her family and friends and will continue to live on in their memories and stories. And, oh, there are so many memories and stories. A memorial service will be held at Myers Park Baptist Church on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Dr. H. Stephen Shoemaker and Mrs. Jewell?s nephew, Dr. Aubrey Q. Patterson, officiating. There will be a gathering of relatives and friends in Heaton Hall at the church following the service. The family will also receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 Friday evening at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Boulevard, Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Carolina Children?s Home, 3201 Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29204 or the Myers Park Baptist Church Benevolent Fund, 1900 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207-2582.
