Wyndolyn Merritt Leonard passed away peacefully at Novant Health, Harris Hospice Unit on January 2, 2015. She was born on October 30, 1921 in Lincolnton, N.C. to Ella Mae and E.B. Merritt. She graduated from Central High School in Charlotte, N.C. in 1940. She met her husband, Frank, while in high school. They were married on July 18, 1942 while he was on leave from the Army during World War II. They recently celebrated seventy-two years of marriage before his passing on October 19, 2014. Windy was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was known to her grandchildren as Maw Maw. She was a member of Calvary Church for many years. She was a member of the Charity League for over forty years where she received the LaRose Grant Award for exemplary service in 1995. A proud Charlottean, she had many friends to whom she was devoted, a heart for service and she never met a stranger. She was an avid bridge player and was a member of several longstanding bridge clubs. Windy was always the first to offer her love and support to anyone who needed it. She had a zest for life and was dearly loved for her sense of humor. She loved her family beyond measure and was never happier than when they were all gathered at her beach house at Ocean Isle, N.C. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Frances Jump and her loving husband Frank. She is survived by her daughter Diane Benson, son Frank Leonard (Carol Anne), four grandchildren, Missie Mansfield (Russell), Carol Ann Hood (Robbie), Janie Bland (Mark) and Frank Leonard (Laura). She is also survived by her nine great grandchildren; Anna and Sarah Mansfield, Caroline and Cameron Hood, Carter and Kalen Bland, and Sam, George and Mary Margaret Leonard. She also loved as a grandson, Cape Terrell. The family would like to thank Sheila Bogar, Lillie Jordan and Rose Nash for their loving and compassionate care for both Frank and Windy. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at Evergreen Cemetery, 4426 Central Avenue, Charlotte, N.C. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Charity League P.O. Box 471432 Charlotte, N.C. 28247 or Hospice & Palliative Care, Harris Hospice Unit, P.O. Box 33549, Charlotte, N.C. 28233-3549.
