Col Worthington M Mahone, USA Retired Col Worthington M Mahone (88) passed away on June 19, 2012. He has been living in Melbourne, Florida since November 2006 with his wife Jean Sinko Mahone. A native Williamsburg, Virginia, Col Mahone entered the U.S. Army in early 1943 and was commissioned in 1944. He served with the 96th Infantry Division in The Pacific Theatre of Operations during the Okinawa Campaign. Col Mahone's 31 years of military service included a variety of Command and Staff assignments. His last command assignment was the Commanding Officer of the 164 Combat Aviation Group during the Vietnam War. A rated Pilot by the US Army and the USAF, he was qualified in many types of fixed and rotary wing aircraft. Col Mahone served in Washington DC and is a graduate of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at Fort McNair. He is also a graduate of the Army Command and Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and the Augusta Military Academy at Fort Defiance, Virginia. His last tour of duty before retiring was with the Combat Developments Experimentation Command at Fort Ord, California, where he was the Deputy Chief of Staff for Experimentation. He retired from the Army in 1974 and became an active Architectural Designer and Contractor in California and Texas. He is a charter member of the Army Aviation Association. He was married to Mina Ayers Matthews of Williamsburg, Virginia for 58 years before her death in 2006. Col Mahone is survived by his wife, Jean S Mahone, daughters Patricia Metzger, Leigh & husband Paul Hoburg, Granddaughters Megan and McKenna Metzger, Step Children Lesley Harris, Bill Sinko, Jr & wife Beth, Margo Ruggiero & husband Dennis, Step Grandchildren, Andrew Harris, Madison Sinko, Alexandra & Jacob Ruggiero.
