Yiu-Hung Liu Obituary
Yiu-Hung Liu was born in Chaozhou, China to Yuen-Tak and Ngah Fung Liu. He died of complications from lymphoma at Providence St. Vincent Hospital in Portland, Oregon, with his loving daughters at his bedside. He was grateful for the excellent care he received from his daughter’s friends and colleagues.
After graduating from college in Taiwan, YH came to the US in 1965 to pursue a Masters’ degree in aerospace engineering at Kansas State University. Hearing it was in Manhattan, he thought he was going to New York City! He arrived with just $1000 and worked hard to support himself and his family. He met his wife, Irene, while working in Boston as a waiter during summer break. They ultimately moved to Wichita, where he worked at Beech/Raytheon Aircraft for 33 years. He became a local fixture on the east side for his years of avid walking–initially from his home in Rockwood to work, and then after retirement on his route around Central and Rock with his trusty dog, Paco. Strangers would come up to him at Dillon’s to tell him they saw him every day on their way to work. The family lost Irene to depression in 1999, and he moved to Oregon to live with his daughters in 2019. During and since the pandemic, they completed too many jigsaw puzzles to count!
He experienced multiple hardships, including bladder cancer and an acoustic neuroma, the removal of which resulted in chronic dizziness. At age 2, he broke both of his knees while running from the Japanese during World War II. Despite this, he never complained, had a positive outlook, and was always cheerful, with a smile for everyone. Though a man of few words, when he spoke, it was often sprinkled with chuckles. He was good natured, patient, generous, intelligent, and delightful to be around. He had the greenest thumb, happily sharing his garden’s bounty with friends. An excellent cook, he spoiled his daughters with home-cooked meals during their times together. He was a Sudoku master, not bothering to do the puzzles in the newspaper until Friday because they were too easy earlier in the week. He was also the kindest, most supportive father his daughters could ever hope for, and is missed beyond belief.
He is survived by his daughters, Lesley and Kristi, of Beaverton, OR. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and brother Keith. His remains will be interred next to Irene’s at Lakeview Cemetery in Wichita, KS.
