Zhaoyue "Zoe" Xu

December 19th, 1922 - October 11th, 2020

Dr. Zhaoyue (Zoe) Xu, 97, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2020. She was born on December 19, 1922 in Haiyan, Zhejiang Province, China. It was during medical school at Shanghai Medical College that she fell in love with her classmate, Changzhi Yuan, whom she married in 1950. Together, they had two daughters, Enlan and Enjing. After her family, Zoe's next greatest love was her work. Following graduation from medical school, she joined Shanghai Huashan Hospital, where she spent her entire career. Zoe was a dedicated doctor to her patients, teacher and mentor to her students, and friend and adviser to her colleagues. She was one of the founders of the hospital's Department of Infectious Diseases, which continues to be the top ranked infectious diseases department in China today. She served as a tenured professor and the associate director of the Department, as well the associate director of the Teaching and Research Group for Infectious Diseases at Shanghai Medical College. She authored and so-authored over 100 papers and books across a wide variety of topics. She also received several awards from the Chinese government and the city of Shanghai for her achievements in medical sciences and technologies to combat infection. Following her retirement in 1997, Zoe moved to the U.S. to be closer to her daughters and their families. She continued to be interested in new theories about, and technologies for, infectious diseases. Zoe was preceded in death by her mother, Shouzhen Sheng; father, Wenrong Xu; husband; and brother, Zhaoqing Xu. She is survived by her daughters, Enlan Yuan (Lian Zou) and Enjing Yuan (Renling Huang); brother, Zhaoli Xu; granddaughters, Jenny Zou and Jennifer Huang (John Cassady); and great-grandchildren, John Jr. and Jasmine. A private family memorial will be held on Saturday, October 17th, with interment at a future date in her native China beside her beloved husband.
