Howard M. Ganong, Jr.
October 16th, 1931 - February 12th, 2023
Howard M. Ganong, Jr. age 91, of Venice, Florida, passed away on February 12, 2023. He was born in Long Branch, New Jersey on October 16, 1931, and moved to Venice in 2022 from Easton, MD. Howard served in the US Army from 1951-1973 including tours in Korea, Vietnam and Germany. After retiring he worked in both restaurant management and marketing sales. During his first year at Ryder College, the Korean War began, and he left school and joined the Army Infantry Division. While at his first duty station in Fort Sill, Oklahoma he was approached about joining the Artillery Division due to his high ASVAB scores. He helped to coordinate the artillery strikes. In 1951 he was stationed in Korea until the cease-fire was given. He did two tours in Germany, another in Korea (during peace time), and one in Vietnam. He taught ROTC at Wofford College and Hofstra College. Howard received several awards, medals and accommodations during his service, a few of which are; the Bronze Star, two Meritorious Service Medals, the Air Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and seven Good Conduct Medals. Howard was an avid stamp collector, loved jigsaw puzzles, enjoyed fishing for anything that would bite his hook and loved traveling. During his military and civilian life he lived in New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Washington State, South Carolina, Maryland, Florida, Germany, Korea and Vietnam. He and his wife Marge moved to Florida in 2022. He especially enjoyed time with his family. Howard is survived by his wife, Margaret T. Ganong. He had eight children, three with his first wife, Ann L. Ganong and five through marriage with his second wife, Margaret T. Ganong; Keith, Danette, Glen (Jami) Leonard, Lori (Lindy), Mike, Jeff and LouAnn; twelve grandchildren, Stephanie (Jordan), Brian (Kimmie), Hillary (Jesse), Stephen (Billie), Matthew, Joshua (Kaitlyn), Hope, Seth, Ben (Alison), Monica (Manny), Tasha, Lenny (Nasra); six great-grandchildren, Hannah, Dutch, Tristan, Jordan, Amar and Sammy. Howard is also survived by his two sisters, Phyllis Darling, Judy Zeban, several nieces and nephews and not to forget his beloved dog, Binky, who never left his side for a second. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Dorothy Ganong, his first wife, Ann L. Ganong and two sons, Glen F. Ganong and Jeffrey McCracken. There will be a brief military service at Sarasota National Cemetery on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at 1:30PM and a Celebration of Life Service to be held in Maryland at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to the Disabled American Veterans (www.dav.org). Farley Funeral Home in Venice, Florida is handling the arrangements.
