It is with great sorrow that the family of Dr. Jeanne Ellen Hicks, age 75, of Charlotte, North Carolina, announce that she passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster. Dr. Hicks, was for 21 years the Deputy Chief of the Rehabilitation Medicine Department of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. She was heralded in an NIH announcement upon her retirement in 2001 as "a jewel in the crown of medicine." Dr. Hicks provided a rare multi-disciplinary certification in four disciplines: internal medicine, infectious diseases, rheumatology and rehabilitation. Her studies in infectious diseases were accomplished at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Dr. Hicks was considered one of the eight leading experts in the world in the area of rehabilitation of people with rheumatic diseases, according to an NIH summary. The summary indicates that her exceptional skills permitted her to support a variety of research protocols and advance the clinical care of NIH patients nationally and internationally. Dr. Hicks was instrumental in integrating rehabilitation into the field of rheumatic diseases by developing a section of Rehabilitative Rheumatology in the American Academy of Rheumatology (ACR), and organizing educational tools for the curriculum in rheumatology fellowship training programs. She was invited to speak nationally and internationally, and presented at various scientific meetings of the ACR and the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. She held adjunct faculty positions as associate professor of internal medicine at George Washington School of Medicine, and in rehabilitation in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Georgetown School of Medicine in Washington DC. At the time of her retirement, she had produced 154 publications, including chapters in major medical texts, and articles and abstracts in referenced journals. She was a reviewer on seven medical journals in her fields. After retirement, she continued to edit articles and chapters for many years. She was listed in the Best Doctors in America and Who's Who Among Women. She was a graduate of Georgian Court College in New Jersey, and completed her Medical Degree at University of Tennessee in Memphis. She graduated from St. Rose High School, in Belmar, New Jersey. She took her residency at University of Cincinnati Medical Center, while she resided with the Dominican Order, as a member. Dr. Hicks was a devout Roman Catholic throughout her life, after her baptism at Church of the Immaculate Conception in Montclair, New Jersey, where she also attended Montclair High School in freshman year. Jeanne took great joy in the celebration of the Mass, for which she was an accomplished organist in many locales, and was for the past four years an active member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Charlotte. She was born August 20, 1940 at Mountainside Hospital, Montclair, NJ. She is the daughter of the late Dr. Alfred M. Hicks, former Director of the Essex County Sanitorium, and Mary Ellen McManus Hicks. Jeanne spent the War Years residing with her parents on Army Air Corps bases in Greensboro (Greensboro ORD), NC, and Plattsburgh, New York, where her father was stationed as a Medical Officer. She is survived by her brothers, William H. Hicks of Charlotte and Alfred E. Hicks of Cary, North Carolina; nephews, Keith William Hicks of Golden, Colorado and Michael Alfred Hicks of Cary, NC; niece, Jenna Nicole Hicks of Clayton, NC; as well as sisters-in-law, Brenda Boggess Hicks of Charlotte and Gloria Ray Hicks of Raleigh.
