Charles Philip Gamble (November 13, 1927-November 13, 2013) Mr. Gamble, appropriately and dramatically, died on the same day he was born, aged 86, on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at Mercy Main. Born in 1927 to the late Charles Franklin Gamble and Martha Brite Norwood Gamble, Mr. Gamble was preceded in death by his brothers, Frank Wilson Gamble, Richard Norwood Gamble, and Jack London Gamble, and sister, Evelyn Mullis Gamble. Philip was married to the former Sally Ann Holbrook from 1962-1982. He is survived by their sons, Philip Keith Gamble and his wife Michele Emmrich Gamble, of Charlotte, Eric Reese Gamble of Charlotte, and John Patrick Gamble and his wife, Anne Lewis Gamble of Memphis, TN. Grandchildren are Reese Alexander Gamble, Oliver Keith Gamble, and Michael Jacob Gamble of Charlotte, Claudia Ann Gamble and Elizabeth Grace Gamble of Monkton, MD, and Charles Appleton Gamble and Caroline Wallis Gamble of Memphis, TN. Philip was a 1946 graduate of Central High School and maintained strong ties with his high school mates in later years, as editor of their quarterly class newsletter. He served in the Army, stationed in Germany between World War II and the Korean War. A graduate in Chemistry from UNC-Chapel Hill, Phil worked for many years as a sales representative with C.P. Hall Company before moving to the environmental laboratory and working a second career for the State of North Carolina in Raleigh, retiring in 1998. Always very proud of his large Waxhaw clan, Philip was a true "Gentle-Man." Full of integrity and honesty, he possessed an unusual empathy and understanding for all people and felt everyone had a story worth telling. He loved literature and history, classical music and opera, conversation and banter. He laughed often and loved good food. He loved his three sons and seven grandchildren dearly and was a shining example for us all. Funeral Service will be held at Hankins & Whittington, 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203 at 1:00 pm on Saturday, November 16, 2013. A Reception for family and friends will follow immediately after the service. Internment will take place at 3:00pm at Southside Cemetery, Waxhaw, NC. In lieu of flowers, family asks that memorials be given in his name to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are in the care of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service; please share condolences online at www.hankinswhittington.com
