William "Lou" Louis Fuller
March 17th, 1954 - November 9th, 2013
William Louis ("Lou") Fuller, of Charlotte, NC, died on November 9, 2013, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, surrounded by family. He was born on March 17, 1954, in Bainbridge, MD, to William ("Bill") Calvin Fuller and Betty Brooks Fuller. Lou Fuller loved his family and friends with fierce and unmatched devotion. He gave unceasingly of his time, talents, and most certainly his heart. Lou was the finest husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, son, big brother, volunteer, co-worker, and friend that one could hope for. Upon graduation from Wake Forest University in 1976, Lou married Constance Cole (Knight), his former wife, of Fayetteville, NC, and moved to Charlotte where he began a fulfilling career with Duke Energy. Lou served as a dedicated member of the Duke team for more than thirty-five years. During that time, he devoted countless breakfasts and lunches to running, work, friendship, and fellowship with the beloved friends and co-workers he met along the way. He devoted his unique care and intellect to numerous community organizations, including International House, WTVI, Charlotte Youth Ballet, and St. John's Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and children's Sunday school teacher for decades. Lou was also a longtime member of the Good Fellows, through which he followed the servant legacy of his grandfather Louis Dewitt Brooks and his grandmother Mary Kennedy Brooks. Lou's happiest moments were spent with his family at youth sports, his children's performances, the theater, on the beach with a book, and sharing smiles and stories around the dinner table. His spirit was enriched most through his loving gifts to others. Lou put his family before himself. Lou married his best friend, Nancy Edwards, of Charlotte, NC, in 1998, and together the two of them built the foundation for a strong blended family. Lou is survived by his loving mother, Betty; sister, Cyndy Garris (Berle); son, Brooks Fuller; daughter, Sarah Fuller; stepchildren, Katie Phillips Burns (Alan), Adam Phillips (Amanda), Maddie Phillips, Izzy Phillips Hayes (Lane); his grandchildren, Aiden Burns and William ("Liam") Phillips; and his son from the Sudan, Abraham Maker, who joined the Fuller/Phillips family in 2001. Lou is preceded in death by his beloved father and role model, Bill. A memorial service and celebration of Lou's life will be held on Wednesday, November 13, 2013, at St. John's Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC at 1:00 p.m. A reception will follow. Overflow parking is available at the Presbyterian Hospital parking garage at the corner of 5th Street and Hawthorne Lane. The Fuller/Phillips family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Geoffrey S. Chapman, Lou's lead medical advocate in Charlotte, Dr. Zanetta S. Lamar and Dr. David D. Hurd, his lead medical advocates at Baptist Medical Center, and the phenomenal physicians and nurses who cared for Lou in the bone marrow transplant unit at Baptist Medical Center. They truly became his support community and family. Memorials may be sent to: St. John's Baptist Church, North Carolina Dance Theater, or Crisis Assistance Ministry, all of Charlotte, NC.
