Memorial

Mark Patrick Shuman, age 64 (DOB:1/22/1952) died following a brave battle against prostate cancer on January 6th, 2017. Mark enjoyed many interests in life from hiking, traveling, kayaking, skiing, helicopter skiing, to fine art, fine dining, the opera, and The NSO. His tastes were varied. Mark’s greatest passion was his thirst for knowledge. He studied Russian and often traveled there. He made many Russian friends along the way. He loved The Rodeo, especially the Steer Wrastling. Shuman was a true cowboy. Professionally, Mark held the position of Branch Chief at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. He was the Branch Chief of AD3 under the Directorship of his good friend and supervisor, Barb Jacobs. Both enjoyed working as a team. Mark often spoke of Barb’s kindness towards others and her strong work ethic, both traits Mark really admired. For 25 years, Mark worked in the Division of Corporation Finance at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. He retired in December 2016 as a Legal Branch Chief in the Division’s Office of Information Technologies & Services where he worked tirelessly to ensure public disclosures and compliance with the federal securities laws. Throughout his distinguished career in public service, Mark was a friend and mentor to an innumerable number of SEC attorneys, instilling in them the same passion and dedication he had to the SEC’s mission of protecting investors and facilitating capital formation. Mark graduated from the University of Colorado with both a J.D. and an advanced degree in Economics. Mark is the son of Colonel Billy (deceased) and Mrs. Jeane K. Shuman of Nashville, TN. He leaves a brother Todd Shuman, and his wife Debbie. While he was growing up, he was part of the military family. Colonel Shuman was a JAG and often took his family to his assignment. As a result, Mark was exposed to many different cultures and truly respected each and every one. Mark leaves behind the love of his life and truly best friend Jay E. Shuman, his wife. He leaves his girls, Rachel and Molly, and his little girl, The Big M (Emma, his 9lb dog). He leaves behind cousins and extended family he enjoyed so much. There will be a Memorial Service at the Advent Funeral Home, 7211 Lee Highway Falls Church, VA at 2:30PM with a catered reception (one last Shu-B-Que) at the residence to follow.
