Leroy "Lee" Phillip Kirstein

Lee Kirstein, 95 years young, passed away leaving his earthly bonds this past Thursday, August 5, 2021. Like many before him, Lee has fallen asleep awaiting the Coming of his glorious Savior, Jesus Christ …. a time when mortal will be changed into immortal, corruptible into incorruptible and those who have chosen to walk in God’s paths will be given life everlasting. Lee was a hard-working, family-man. He was a loving and devoted husband, a strong and dependable father and a doting grandfather and great-grandfather. Lee was recently predeceased by his beloved wife of 71 years, Agnes. He is survived by his two sons, Sid and Teresa Kirstein of Lynchburg and Dean and Nora Kirstein of Blacksburg. Lee is survived by his five lovely grandchildren Kellie (and Kevin Grunkemeyer), Kim (and Ron Patrick), Kara (and Tripp Leftwich), Kate and Sara (and Jano Silva) and his lively great-grandchildren; Kennedy, Ashlyn, Brycen, Matthew, Reid, Thomas and Eliza. All who knew or worked with Lee knew him as a good man who will be greatly missed by his family, friends and acquaintances. Lee was the son of Minnie and Isadore Kirstein. He was born and grew up in Norfolk, Virginia. Lee graduated from Maury High School and enlisted in the Navy proudly serving and defending our Country in World War II. Lee worked his way up the ranks having earned the rank of Lieutenant JG CIC (serving with the Combat Information Center…radar, sonar etc.) before being honorably discharged from the Navy so he could attend College. After the War, Lee was accepted into and graduated from UVA’s McIntire School of Business. While living in Charlottesville, he met Agnes, the love of his life. When she passed, he gratefully acknowledged that she was the best thing that ever happened to him. Agnes and Lee were married in 1949 and moved to Lynchburg in 1960. Agnes worked as the Secretary for Paul Monroe Elementary School for 25 years. Lee worked for First Colony Life, later Genworth, in their Reinsurance Department. Lee was well-known for riding his bicycle along Rivermont Avenue each morning and afternoon, rain or shine, going to work downtown, and doing so well into his 70’s. He prided himself in trying to stay in good physical condition. Agnes and Lee attended and were devoted members of Peakland Baptist Church. A funeral service will be held on this Friday, August 13th. Family and friends can meet at 12:00 PM for visitation, a reception and fellowship. The Chapel service will follow at 1:00 PM. All this will occur at The Diuguid Funeral Home on Wiggington Road in Lynchburg, VA. Burial will follow at the Springhill Cemetery in Lynchburg.
