John Bosworth McDonald

John Bosworth McDonald, 92, died at his home in Cocoa Beachafter a long illness on Thursday, August 27, 2015. John ""Jack"" was born on July 29, 1923 in Washington D.C. to John Yates and Dorothy Bosworth McDonald and grew up in Charles Town, West Virginia. Jack attended Episcopal High in Alexandria, Virginia and the Elgin Academy in Elgin, Illinois. Jack served in the paratroops in the U.S. Army during World War II. He studied Engineering at the University of West Virginia in Morgantown, where he met his future wife, Mary McClung. Jack was the proprietor of Ridgewood Drive-In Theater and Jack's Radio and TV Service. After marriage, Jack graduated from Southern Tech in Atlanta, Georgia in Electrical Engineering. In 1956, Jack and his family moved to Cocoa Beach, Florida where Jack was employed as a telemetry technician, in management, and as an instructor in the RCA Missile Test Project. His family grew to include one son and four daughters. Jack laterearned a B.S. in Business from the University of Central Florida and retired to become a full time investor. He was an instructor at Brevard Community College for a time. Jack was a commercial single engine pilot with instrument and glider ratings. He enjoyed scuba diving and was certified in open water. He loved to travel and visited all six continents with longtime friend and companion, Pat Jones. Jack is survived by his five children, Alastair McDonald Odom and L. Megan McDonald of Asheville, North Carolina, Nelson B. McDonald of Orlando, Florida, Sheila McDonald of Milan, Italy, and Polly McDonald Loyd (Tim) of Portland Oregon, five grandchildren, Emily Nyberg of Wellington, New Zealand, LeaceyBacchuber of Efland, North Carolina, Stuart and Catherine McDonald of Atlanta, Georgia, and William Odom, III of Indiana, and by three great grandchildren. He is also survived by brother, Angus W. McDonald of Charles Town and sister, Eleanora Worth of Alexandria, Virginia. A Celebration of Life service will be held in the Recreation Room at 2100 North Atlantic Avenue on Sunday, August 30, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. Jack will be remembered for his dry wit, his gentile manner and his great generosity. Special thanks to all the caregivers from Health First Private Duty and Hospice of St. Francis for their exceptional care of Jack during his illness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army or a charity of one's choice.
