Susan Ward "Sue" Overman
March 25th, 1927 - May 5th, 2022
The true measure of a life well-lived is the legacy that one leaves behind. For Susan “Sue” Ward Overman of Greensboro, whose spirit passed peacefully to heaven on May 5, 2022, that legacy is found in the family and friends she leaves behind. In her 95 years on this earth Sue created a foundation upon which a loud, raucous and loving family would be built. A family of unique and dynamic individuals, each of whom carry with them a piece of Sue’s quiet strength, wisdom, dry wit and a sly sense of humor. Born on March 25th, 1927 to V.R. and Mary Dalton Ward, Sue lived the entirety of her life in Greensboro. She graduated from Greensboro Senior High School in 1944 and attended the North Carolina College for Women. The majority of her professional life was spent working for over 30 years at McGladrey & Pullen, LLP. During that time, Sue raised seven children, all of whom would prove to be her life’s biggest accomplishment. Watching her children grow into their own and start their own families was Sue’s great joy in life. She relished in her role as family matriarch; your biggest fan in times of celebration and jubilation, and a steady hand in times of turmoil and mourning. She was consistently even-keeled and never minced words; an invaluable trait that has served each of us well throughout our lives. She never backed down from a challenge and never allowed anyone to give in. This was evidenced when, at the age of 70, she learned American Sign Language in order to communicate with her youngest Granddaughter-indeed, no one was going to miss out on Sue’s wisdom. And there-in lies her legacy. A fierce woman, who would meet any challenge head on, a woman who loved many and gave every ounce of herself to the ones she loved. She witnessed so much in her long life, but to find her true joy, you simply needed to catch a quiet glimpse of her at a family gathering. That moment when you gaze across the crowded, noisy room filled with her clan, and you see it. The consummate matriarch, sitting quietly looking out over her legacy as a slight grin forms across her face, relishing in a life well-lived. Sue is preceded in death by her husband, J.D. Overman; daughter, Linda Sue Overman; brothers, V.R. Ward, Walter Ward, and Jim Ward; sisters, Sara Ward Vinson, and Mary Lee Ward Overman. She is survived by sister, Becky Williams and brother, Claude Ward; her son, Ray Overman and wife, Linda of Reidsville, NC; son, Bill Overman and wife, Lisa of Greensboro; daughter, Kay Preston and husband, Joey of Greensboro; son, Robert “Bob” Overman and wife, Monica of Greensboro; son, Wally Overman and wife, Martha of Greensboro; daughter, Mary Black and husband, Monty of Jamestown, NC; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 13th at 11:00am at Guilford Memorial Park, 6000 West Gate City Blvd., Greensboro, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family is encouraging donations to the Libby and Lucy Overman Fund c/o UNC Health Foundation, 123 West Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC 27576 or online at https://www.manuckresearch.org/libby_lucy.html Friends and family may view, and sign the guestbook at www.Pierce-JeffersonFuneralService.com
