September 17th, 1931 - August 16th, 2012
Greensboro, NC Mr. Wilbert Meadows ' Dink' Hawks, of 1509 19th Street, Greensboro, NC went to meet his Lord and Savior on Thursday August 16, 2012 at Beacon Place. The funeral service will held 2:00 PM Saturday at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Service Chapel with the Reverend John Jarman officiating. Burial will follow with full military honors in Lakeview Memorial Park. He was born in the White Oak Village on September 17, 1931 in Greensboro, NC to the late Glen O. and Addie B. Hawks. He had 4 siblings; Winfred 'Wink', Merlin 'Pee Wee', Larry and Jerry He attended Ceasar Cone Elementary and Rankin High School. He joined the United States Navy in 1952 and served aboard the USS Essex, USS Valley Forge and the USS Rendova as a plane captain. He married Carol Mae Mitchell on September 11, 1952 in Chesterfield, South Carolina and together they had 3 children: Billy, Marsha and Jean. After an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1956, he went to work at Cone Mills White Oak Plant and retired in 1992 as Air Filtration Supervisor. He was also an active member of the American Legion Cone Post 0386 since 1961. This Post is most famous for their Hot Dog Sale on Saturday's. He also served as Commander in 1963 and was Legionaire Of The Year in 1973. He is a Lifetime Member of this Post. Dink accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savoir on March 22, 2000 and joined Rankin Baptist Church on April 2, 2000. He was ordained as a Deacon on September 29, 2002. He and Carol were also active in the sign ministry at Rankin Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife Carol Mae Hawks of the home; children Billy Hawks and wife Cindy of Lexington, NC; Marsha Bottomley and husband Gary of Greensboro, NC and Jean Redden and husband Jack of Stokesdale. NC; daughter in-law Vina Hawks Swope of Thomasville mother of Alan and Leigh Ann; brother Jerry Hawks and wife Sue of Greensboro, NC; sister in-laws Nancy Hawks and Norvella Hawks both of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren Alan and wife Lindsey, Leigh Ann and husband Chris, Brittany and husband William, Layne and husband Kenny, Mitch and wife Emily. Will, Ashley, Caley, Tyler and Adam; great-grandchildren Cole, Justin, Madalyn, Matthew, Kaelyn, Kiera and Lily(to be born in October, 2012) and loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Glen O. and Addie B. Hawks; brothers Winfred, Merlin and Larry Hawks; granddaughter Addie Rebecca Redden at birth. He was a very loving, kind and generous man to everyone who knew him. He always worked hard for his family and was always willing to help someone in need. There is no way to put in words what he has meant to us, but this says it best; There are some folk we met in passing and forget them as they go. There are some we remember with pleasure and feel honored and privileged to know. This is most definitely our Daddy.
