A private graveside service for Mary Helen Starr will be held on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The Reverends Barry Gray and Jerry Long will officiate. The family will receive friends at Greenlawn Funeral Home on Tuesday from 1:00pm to ¬¬¬¬2:00pm. Memorials may be made to the building fund at Shandon Baptist Church or to the Kosair Children?s Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. On-line condolences may be sent to www.greenlawnmemorialparkandfh.com. The family has entrusted Greenlawn Funeral Home with the arrangements. Mary Helen died on Sunday, March 18, 2012. She was born in Louisville, Kentucky, where she lived most of her life. She was the daughter of Captain Treverton and Mary Ellen Upton (nee Smith). Mary Helen, her twin sister Martha, and their mother all shared Halloween as their birthday. She was an Executive Secretary at WHAS, Inc. in Louisville, a television and radio company, where she met her husband, Gordon Starr. For years, she was a dedicated volunteer for Kosair Children?s Hospital and also did hospital volunteer work at Louisville?s Baptist Hospital. Mary Helen and Gordon moved to Columbia over a decade ago to be near their family. Her parents, her sister Martha Upton and her daughter Nancy Lee Owens, preceded her in death. Surviving is her husband, Gordon H. Starr; her son, Daniel White (Rebecca); her son-in-law, James Owens; grandchildren, James Owens, Jr. (Irene), Melissa Butler (Charl), Mindy Cassell (Eric), and Brendan and Maren White; and great grandchildren, Matthew and Christopher Owens, Claire and Emma Butler, and Andrew and Olivia Cassell.
