His great grandfather, Pedro Valdez, whose lineage originated in Spain, came north to Colorado from New Mexico as part of a group of seven families who were looking for a new area to live. Gabriel Valdez, Alfred’s grandfather, the 1 Colorado, founded the town of Valdez, in an area west of Trinidad. His son, Jose Sebedeo Valdez and Alfred’s father, was born and raised in Trinidad, Colorado. He married Regina F. Ortega and raised three sons, Alfred, Macario and Joe C. After his service in the Army, Alfred returned to Trinidad. In 1948, he met and married Jennie Gonzales and together, they moved to Denver where they raised the 4th, 5th and 6th generations of the Valdez family in Colorado. Alfred was a World War II veteran. He served as squad leader in Company E, 381 Infantry in the Asiatic Pacific Theater for 16 months. He participated in the Invasions of Leyte and Okinawa. He was in charge of 12 enlisted men as a patrol leader. He saw that men were supplied with ammunition and rations. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his heroism when he took a bullet shielding one of his enlisted men. Alfred loved his Broncos and he also liked to relax outdoors. He loved to fish and work in the garden. In his better years, he always had the greenest lawn on the block, and in fact, he had to have mowed the lawns of all of his children and grandchildren at one time or another. Chocolates and cookies were one of his weaknesses and he could be tempted easily anytime. He enjoyed all of the family gatherings especially his birthday parties. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his family, especially all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
