Lucy Ann Hopkins
July 14th, 1936 - December 24th, 2016
Lucy Ann Hopkins passed away peacefully on the morning of December 24, 2016. She was born on July 14, 1936 in Brownsville, Texas to Miller and Ellen Harwell. After a brief period of time in San Antonio, Texas, the family moved to Greenville, Texas, where her father completed his WWII Civil Service duties. This is where the family would remain throughout her childhood. Lucy frequently reminisced about her elementary and high school experiences in Greenville, and the friendships she held dear the entire remainder of her life. Always loyal, she would want those special friends to know how important they were to her. Her compassionate and caring nature kept her on the lookout for those less fortunate. When she identified such a person or family, she made certain they would not experience the holidays without food and gifts. In some instances she would attend to their needs throughout the year. Many years spent volunteering as a member of the Assistance League of Greeley was a perfect expression of her generosity and created wonderful friendships for her in the community. Lucy’s engaging smile, sense of humor and gift of conversation could lead to an instant connection with a complete stranger. This would sometimes cause long lines at the grocery store checkout station while Lucy and a stranger talked about their grandchildren. She was artistically gifted and leaves us with many examples of her sense of color combinations, needlepoint creations, oil paintings and prize winning ceramic decorating. She was also queen of the kitchen providing an endless variety of cooking and baking dishes. Always looking for something new, she attended numerous seminars on traditional, as well as Asian and Mexican foods. Lucy held a deep love for her family and their frequent gatherings were priceless to her. She adored her grandchildren and had a huge impact on their formative years. She took great pride in their character and accomplishments and was not shy about offering them advice if she thought a little course correction was in order. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Elaine Baker and Melissa Jenkins, and her brother Miller Harwell. Her survivors include her husband of 63 years, Bill Hopkins; daughter Julia Hopkins and her partner Kathy Kerestes of Greeley; son William Hopkins and his wife Sherri Hopkins of Gold Canyon, Arizona; daughter Amie Coan and her husband Brent Coan of Fort Collins; sister Sandra Mauney and her husband Jim Mauney of Dallas, Texas; sister Mary Ramsey and her husband Steve Ramsey of Greenville, Texas; grandchildren Amy Wright of Bloomington, Illinois; Chelsea (Bob) Saenz of Greeley; Allyson Coan of Los Angeles, California; Austin Hopkins of Greeley; Mitchell Coan of Boulder, Colorado; great granddaughter Aishlyn Saenz of Greeley; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, January 21, 2017 at the Adamson Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the "Assistance League of Greeley” in care of Adamson Cares, 2000 47th Ave., Greeley, CO, 80634. To extend condolences to the family go to adamsoncares.com.
