Robert Steger
August 6th, 1934 - June 18th, 2024
Robert P. Steger opened his eyes for the first time on earth August 6, 1934 and closed his eyes for the last time June 18, 2024 opening them in the presence of his Lord and savior Jesus Christ.
On his 19th birthday he joined the Marine Corps and proudly served in the Korean War from 1953-1956. He had the privilege of attending his Honor Flight to Washington DC on April 16, 2016. After serving he returned to his job as a Sheet Metal Worker for Rafoth Sheet Metal. His dream of owning his own business led him to move his family to Wisconsin where Steger Sheet Metal was born. After five years, circumstances led him to take a position with Mared Mechanical where he was a journeyman and lead for many projects. He retired from the work force at the age of 62 and a new passion would fill his days. Robert would spend the next 28 years fishing whenever he could. His favorite fishing partner was his grandson, Shawn, and on most weekends, you could find him in Crandon with daughter Denise and her husband David fishing with friends and family on Pine Lake. The last couple of years he stopped traveling and spent his time with daughter Carrie and her husband Bret fishing the lakes and rivers in Cambridge.
He was also an avid fan of his 7 grandchildren and attended every sporting event from BMX racing to soccer, baseball, basketball, wrestling, track and field, diving, ice skating, ice hockey, lacrosse, musical productions and piano concerts. Robert was a strong-willed individual and proved his grit by surviving the many health challenges he was handed. From a mechanical heart valve to a TIA, bleeding duodenal ulcer, melanoma and prostate cancer. In the end, it was a rare condition, Myelodysplastic Syndrome, that he could not overcome.
Robert is survived by his children Denise (David) Books, Carrie (Bret) Trowbridge, Chris Steger and Dale (Tricia) Steger. Grandchildren Shawn (Kayla) Books, Christopher (Ashley) Books, Trevin (Amber Carpenter) Steger, Hadley (Ryan Sheriff) Steger, Brady Steger, Sarah Steger and Sophie Steger. Great grandchildren Hayden, Ryan and Cameron Books, Harper Books, Sophia Camacho and Josie Mae Steger. He is further survived by his former wife Sandra Steger, sister-in-law Velma Steger and many, many nieces and nephews. Waiting to welcome him in heaven are grandchildren Riley Steger and Megan Steger. His parents Michael and Mary Steger along with his 13 brothers and sisters; Jim, Paul, Francis, Herbert, Sylvester, Raymond, Donald, Caroline, Margaret, Terese, Rosemary, Agnes and Mable who will all rejoice in their family reunion.
The visitation for Robert will be held on Sunday June 23, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. to the start of services at 11:00 a.m. at Cesarz Charapata & Zinnecker Funeral Home 237 N Moreland Blvd Waukesha, WI 53188. Burial will take place at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery (21731 Spring Street. Union Grove, WI) on July 2, 2024 where he will then receive full military honors.
Family wishes to acknowledge and give special thanks to all of Robert’s doctors who took such great care of him during his life, especially Dr. Paul O'Neill of ProHealth Care and the ProHealth Hospice Care team for helping us work through his final days to keep him comfortable
