Robert W. Forbes

Mr. Robert W. Forbes, 88, of McElwain Avenue, Amsterdam died unexpectedly on December 11, 2015 at Albany Medical Center. Born on September 3, 1927 in Amsterdam he was the son of the late George and Marion Davis Forbes. A lifelong city resident, Bob was a graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School and served proudly with the United States Navy during WWII. When he returned to home he was united in marriage to Lois "Jean" Habla on August 7, 1949. For over 30 years, Bob served as a fireman with the City of Amsterdam until his retirement as Battalion Chief. Bob was also active the Fireman's Union serving as president. He also enjoyed being a carpenter and specialized in home improvement projects. He also built many homes in the area and was an iron worker. Bob was also instrumental in forming the Mohawk Ski Patrol and was an avid skier. He was an accomplished tennis player and enjoyed square dancing. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jean; three children, Jeffrey Forbes, Jill Rogers and Dale Twardzik; 6 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother George and David; and a daughter in law, Marcene. Relatives and friends are invited to visitation on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 from 5 until 7p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam. Burial will take place privately at St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to GAVAC or the charity of one's choice.
