On Sunday, June, 14, 2020, Americo Sanchez, loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, went to be with the Lord at the age of nearly 102. Americo was born in 1918 in Ciales, Puerto Rico, to Ramon and Isabela Sanchez. In 1947 he married the love of his life Carmen Luz Pena. Preceded by his wife Carmen, 1928-2002, they raised 2 sons, Edwin (1949-1994) and Rick and one daughter, Irma. Americo has 5 grandchildren, Roxanne, Eddie, Melissa, Megan and Jennifer. Americo was blessed with 6 great grandchildren, Jacob, Ashley, Billy, Lauren, Charlotte and Julie, with a 7th on her way. Americo, a WWII Veteran, served in the US Army from 1941-1947 overseas in Company A 65th Infantry as Rifleman (745), Expert Infantryman. He was decorated with the following medals: Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, 9 Overseas Service Bars, American Defense Service Medal with Metal Clasp, American Theater Service Medal, European – African – Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars. Americo was beloved by family and friends. He was a deacon and an elder of The New Jerusalem Pentecostal Church in Haverstraw, New York. At the age of 101 he continued his ritual of walking every day and using weights to keep himself fit. He was a life-long Yankees fan and received many gifts from them. Every year on Labor Day weekend the family and friends celebrated his birthday at the Stony Point Park with a Pig Roast that has always been a cherished tradition. He was known for his story-telling, sense of humor, kindness to others, and his compassionate spirit. He will be forever loved and deeply missed. There will be a virtual livestream viewing on Wednesday, June 17th, 2020. Interment will be held on Thursday, June 18th, 11am, at Frederick Loescher Veterans Cemetery. Masks and social distancing required at the cemetery please.
