A Hui Hou

It is with sadness that we share the passing of a beloved husband, father, and grandfather who left us on August 15, 2024 at the age of 74.

He was a man of immense humor and wisdom, cherishing every moment spent with loved ones.  His passion for photography, computing, and his unwavering spirit will forever be remembered.  He is survived by his wife of 30+ years, Carol White, daughters Kerry Susanne Cabanlit, Jennifer Ann Cabanlit-Llamas, sons David Nano Cabanlit and Paul Decola Cabanlit, III, many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, who will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest.

Paul D. Cabanlit, Jr. passed away after suffering from MDS (Myelodysplastic Syndrome) a cancerous blood disorder for the past several years.

Paul was born on February 14, 1950, to Paul D. Cabanlit, Sr. and Gloria Mitsuko Higa in Queen’s Hospital, Honolulu, Hawaii.  Paul lived in Honolulu until he moved to the mainland in 1966 and settled in Watsonville, California, where he finished his last 2 years of schooling at Watsonville High School.

After graduating from Watsonville High School, Paul entered the United States Air Force at 19 years old.  He attended basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.  He then went to tech school at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Mississippi.  Upon graduation Paul returned home to Watsonville to marry Helena Valdez in 1969.  Paul was assigned to 6981st Security Squadron, Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, Morse System Operator, DF (Direction Finding) and was discharged from the United States Air Force in 1972.

Paul's marriage to Helena Valdez ended in divorce in 1993.  He then married Carol J. White in 1995.

As a father, Paul was an all-around good person.  He loved playing music on his reel-to-reel tape recorder.  He used to sing along to The Beatles and Elvis with some typical dad dance moves.  You know the ones that just make you smile.  He found so much pride and joy playing baseball with his sons and watching them play Salsipuedes Little League.  He was their number one fan.

He was the type of dad that took his kids to watch the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park every summer whether they liked it or not.  Paul also enjoyed taking his family to Reno because he could gamble while his kids had fun at Circus Circus.

Later in life, he went on family trips to Hawaii and Mexico with his children and grandchildren.  Those were times that he cherished the most.  Paul was able to capture these memories with his yearly Christmas calendars.

Private services will be held with immediate family only.  Any donations can be made in Paul’s honor to the Dominican Hospital Mary & Richard Solari Cancer Center at 3150 Mission Drive, Santa Cruz, CA 95065.
