In Loving Memory: Evan Christian Hill
It is with overwhelming grief that our family announces the sudden loss of our beloved son, Evan, who died recently, at the young age of 41. Our grief is tempered by reflection on what a kind and gentle person Evan was: how, despite the shortness of his life, he was loved and admired. His family and friends will hold him in memory, trusting in God’s enduring promise of grace to support us in our sorrow.
Evan was born on May 26th, 1983, in Olympia, to Woody and Margo (Minnick) Hill. His childhood was marked by good times and family adventures. Evan met life-long friends through baseball, soccer, and basketball teams, one being, the “Brownies”, who organized themselves, and continued playing YMCA basketball throughout high school.
Always a “natural” with kids, Evan and his cousins enjoyed good times together. He was popular as a counselor at Camp Cispus, where he taught 5th graders to dance the “Electric Slide”. Parents of his 5th grade campers even recruited him to coach their sons’ basketball team.
In his Senior autobiography, Evan wrote “I love it here too much for my own good…” His music skills blossomed in his teen years. He was selected to play a trumpet solo in a jazz band concert, and earnings from his paper route were spent to buy drum machines. He and his best friend spent hours composing new beats, and even competed in Battle of the Bands. As a member of the Olympia Network News staff, he wove music & humor into school news videos . Evan was chosen king for OHS Homecoming Dance his senior year, and he graduated in June of 2001.
After completing two years at SPSCC, Evan graduated from WSU in 2006, with a major in Elementary Education. Choosing to pursue a new path, he began a career in the software marketing industry in Seattle. Always a team player, Evan was remembered by colleagues for his creativity, and his uncanny ability to inspire and bring out the best in those around him.
Playing outfield for the Monkey Pub 86’ers team, along with older brother, Geoff, Evan was affectionately dubbed, “Baby Hill”. He was always up for a game of golf (or frisbee golf) with his dad, brother, grandfather, uncles, and cousins, but not because he was a particularly skilled golfer. His enthusiasm for the game spoke more to his kindness towards the people he cared about.
Evan’s defining joys were music and graphic art. His first love was creating multi-faceted music, using a variety of elements, including his voice. He was excited to provide music for friends’ weddings and began publishing his music.
Ultimately, those who knew Evan well, remember him for his good humor, and creativity. He’s been described as “confident, witty, unflappable, deep, compassionate, complicated and private”.
Evan is survived by his parents; his brother, Geoff Hill, (his partner, Kelly Rudhe), his sister, Marla Calvert, (Dan); his two nieces, Isa & Quin Calvert; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and an endless circle of friends, whom he loved dearly.
Memorials Suggestion: Homes First/Oxford House projects in Thurston County.
