Richard Dwight Craven, 76, of Charleston, SC, passed away on October 24, 2024. Born on April 8, 1948, Richard was known for his hardworking nature, love for fishing, and devotion to his family. A proud veteran, he served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and retired in 1992.Richard was a stalwart supporter of the Salvation Army, driving their donation truck and participating in the Red Kettle Campaign. His enthusiasm extended to the volleyball court, where he played a crucial role in leading the Charleston Corps to victory at the Men's Camp volleyball championship annually.He is survived by his wife, Walta Craven; children, Richard Craven Jr., Frances Shaffer, Grace Craven, and James Walter Craven; siblings, James "BoBo" Craven, Jack Michael Craven, and Cynthia "Cindy" Goude; and granddaughters, Sarah Shaffer, Courtney Shaffer, and Olivia Craven. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Louise Snelson Williams and James Craven, and his sister, Ann Able.Richard was a graduate of St. Andrews High School in West Ashley, SC. His hobbies included spending cherished moments with his grandkids, watching his favorite shows "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy," and playing volleyball.Richard worshipped at the Salvation Army in Charleston, SC, where a memorial service will be held on October 28, 2024, at 5 PM at 2135 Ashley River Road, Charleston SC 29407. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Salvation Army Church of Charleston SC.
