Erika McKenzie Obituary
On the cold morning of January 5, 1952 in the small town of Freising Germany, Erika Jean Lane began her life atop her grandmother’s feather bed. Because her father was in the military, she spent the next twenty years (more or less) going from one Air Force base to another. As she grew older, she met and married a young Air Force man, Jeff Dyer. They had two beautiful children but, after sixteen years of marriage, she and Jeff went their separate ways.
As a single mother, she worked hard to make ends meet. She went back to school to earn a degree in business management, showing her children the need for advancement. Her children, Michael Dyer, Chief Master Sergeant (Retired) USAF and Stacey Scott, RN, MSN, NE-BC learned that lesson well.
In 1993, she finally met and married the love of her life, Ken McKenzie. They had a wonderful life for the next thirty-one years and enjoyed each other’s company immensely. Erika and Ken loved adventure and enjoyed going from one trip to the next, just seeing where the road would take them. Aside from time with her husband, Erika enjoyed counted cross stitch (of which she was a true artist) and keeping her mind sharp with word puzzles like crosswords and word finds.
Aside from Ken and her children, Mike (Danielle) Dyer and Stacey (Anthony) Scott, Erika leaves behind innumerable friends, family, and loved ones to mourn her loss. They include her mother, Irma Lane; siblings, Eric (Kay) Lane, Charles Lane, Sr, Richard (Debbie) Lane, Steven Lane, and Susan (Larry) Filion; grandchildren Darren Dyer, Robert Dyer, and Kaitlyn (Randall) Wolff; and great grandchildren, Hadley and Dawson Wolff. Erika’s highest pride was her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Through her long fight with cancer, she taught everyone around her the beauty of grace through adversity. She will truly be missed and will never be forgotten.
