Anne Henkel (1945-2024)

Anne Henkel, beloved wife, mother, grandma, and teacher to generations of Chicoans, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on November 23, 2024.

Anne Nancy Henkel was born on July 12, 1945 in Madison, Wisconsin. Her parents Harold and Charlotte Geyer raised her and her two siblings Thom and Judy a few hours away in Platteville, a quintessential American town, too small to have stop lights. Anne described her childhood as a happy one, where she enjoyed sewing, playing board games, and spending time with her close friends Blanche Correll, Judy Wheeler, and Joan Cairy.

Anne loved learning and earned university degrees in Math, English and Education, receiving her Masters from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She was working as a school teacher in Madison when she met her husband Ken. They were married in 1974 and three years later had their only child Gregory, a healthy baby that she was proud of. In 1979, Anne and her young family moved to Chico.

Anne taught math at Chico Junior and Chico High School for 35 years. She woke up every day at 5am so she could arrive early for students who needed extra help, and she spent her evenings and weekends grading papers. She would buy extra school supplies for families that couldn’t afford them, would pack extra food for kids that had nothing to eat, and she’d spend her lunch break eating with students who had no friends. Anne retired at the age of 70, ending a teaching career of 46 total years. It wasn’t uncommon to hear from students that she had also taught their parents. Anne couldn’t go anywhere around town without someone saying hello to Mrs. Henkel.Anne was kind, patient, and gentle, always with something cheerful to say and never forgetting a birthday card for her grandkids, nieces and nephews. She loved her family immensely, and we adored her too.

Anne celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary over the summer to her husband Ken. She is also survived by her son Greg, her granddaughters Pallas and Astra, and her siblings Thom and Judy. Her family will be holding a celebration of life at Brusie Funeral Home in Chico at 11am on December 8th.
