Eric Charles Brookens, 82, of Colorado Springs, passed away after a valiant battle against Parkinson’s on Sunday, December 1, 2024, surrounded by his family. Born on Christmas Day in 1941 to Dwight and Margaret Brookens, Eric was raised in Park Ridge, Illinois, where he discovered an early love for adventure and achievement, earning his Eagle Scout—a source of lifelong pride.

Eric pursued business administration at The University of Denver, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in 1964. He furthered his academic journey at the University of Illinois, obtaining his Master's degree in Elementary Education. Following his studies, he dedicated two years to the Peace Corps, serving in Panama and making a significant impact on the communities he served.

In 1967, Eric married Barbara Betterman, a partnership that brought joy and purpose to his life. They settled in Buena Vista, Colorado, where Eric began his teaching career and started a family. He devoted many years to educating young minds before accepting a position with the Colorado Department of Corrections in 1972, where he worked to help inmates achieve their GEDs and oversaw the vocational programs. In 1997 as the Department’s Vocational Education Coordinator he developed a program where inmates refurbished wheelchairs for Wheelchairs for the World, a Joni Eareckson Tada Ministry. In 1993 his leadership and dedication were recognized when he was appointed to oversee the education program for all correctional facilities in Colorado, a role he cherished until his retirement in 2002.

After Barbara’s passing, Eric found love again and married LeaAnn Portz in 1991. Together, they created a new chapter in Colorado Springs, where they resided until his passing. Even in retirement, Eric’s passion for education remained strong as he continued to teach as a substitute teacher for many years.

Eric was a man of many passions and talents. An avid cyclist, he loved competing in bicycle races and remained an enthusiastic sports fan, especially when it came to baseball and basketball. He enjoyed collecting stamps and coins, traveling, and spending time tinkering with vintage Porsche automobiles. An enthusiastic ping-pong player, Eric welcomed any challenger to a match and relished the joy of friendly competition.

Eric is survived by his beloved wife, LeaAnn Brookens. He was a devoted father to his children from his first marriage, Dr. Todd (Megan) Brookens of Monclova, Ohio, and Kristin (Jeremy) Tittle of Denver, Colorado. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Isaac (Jenny) Portz of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, and Ryan (Katie) Portz of Edwards, Colorado. Eric is also remembered by his brother, Dr. Bruce (Ann) Brookens, and their children, Daphne Brookens, Peter (Bethany) Brookens, Drs. Andrew (Jamie) Brookens, and Li Brookens. He cherished his grandchildren: Jaden, Ellasyn, Toryn, Connor, Keira, Mason, Holden, and June. His legacy extends to many lifelong friends who will miss him dearly.

In keeping with his deep commitment to education and service, Eric chose to donate his remains to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Center for medical research, continuing to give even after his passing.

Eric's life was defined by his love for family, his love for his Lord and Savior, his commitment to helping others, and his adventurous spirit. He will be greatly missed, but his memory and influence will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.

A Memorial Service will be held on February 8, 2025 at 2:00PM at Wilson Community Church located at 6460 Flying W Ranch Rd., Colorado Springs, Colorado 80919.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Eric's name to his church, Wilson Community Church , wilsoncos.org/give
