Edward Mayland Matthews Jr. (Ted), a remarkable man of ambition, energy, and generosity, passed away peacefully at home on November 27th, 2024 in Tucson, Arizona at the age of 75. Born on June 8th, 1949, in the charming town of Newfields, New Hampshire, to parents Edward Sr. and Nancy (Rumford) Matthews, Edward grew up with his siblings, Neal Matthews and Mary Belanger, and created a life of diverse talents and enduring love.

Ted was a devoted husband to Joyce (Evans) Matthews, his beloved wife of 56 years. They were married on June 8th, 1968 at Newfields Community Church. Together, they built a rich life filled with laughter and love, nurturing their three children: Edward Matthews, Cynthia Matthews, and Amelia Nance. His legacy of warmth extends to his eight cherished grandchildren, whom he adored immensely.

Educated at Exeter High School, class of 1967, and later at the University of New Hampshire, where he graduated in 1986, Edward was a man of profound dedication. His career showcased his brilliance, beginning with his apprenticeship at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He went on to become a chemist, contributing significantly to the development of the stealth bomber. Ted’s dedication and passion led him to many adventures in New Hampshire, Ohio, and Arizona.

Beyond his professional achievements, Edward was a lover of the arts. He began his musical journey at 16, playing in bands such as Diggory Venn and Ink Spots, and was known for designing his own drum sets. His creative spirit also flourished in painting, where he crafted masterpieces that graced the homes of many family members and friends. He also wrote and published two books, “The Best Under the Sun” and “Adagio for the Undead.”

Edward’s generosity and zest for life touched all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness and creativity, enriched by a lifetime of artistic endeavors and love for his family.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
