Charles (Chuck) Laine

Chuck died December 23, 2024 at his home on Hilton Head Island. He was preceded in death by his college sweetheart and his wife of 48 years Nancy and brother-in-law Chuck Helton. He leaves his sister–in–law Bobbi Helton, niece, Shauna Helton, surrogate son and daughter–in-law Jerry and Mary MacMillan and his favorite dog Sadie.

Chuck was born in Cleveland, Ohio and after graduating from Ohio University joined the Army. Next step was an entry level position with the J.M. Smucker, a small regional preserve company. At that time, Smucker’s sales were approximately thirty million dollars and today they are close to eight billion. Chuck first held a variety of sales positions and then moved into marketing, spending the middle part of his career as Vice President of marketing and the final phase of career as Vice President and General Manager of two of their five business units, International and Natural Foods.

After retirement Chuck moved to Hilton Head with a plan to do nothing but play golf and relax. Also, since the last two months with Smucker’s he was around the world twice on business he vowed he would not get on an airplane for a year and he did not! His plan to just relax did not last long. Starting as a Volunteer at the Golf Club at Indigo Run where he held a variety of positions including Chairman of the golf committee and Board of Directors. His next Volunteer position was with the Hilton Head Humane Association proudly participating in its growth as Chairman, from 2006 until his death. In March of 2019, he cut the ribbon at the Beaufort County Animal Campus, the largest public/partnership in the history of the county. This 20,000 sq. ft. facility on 100 acres of land is now home to Beaufort County animal services, HHHA’s spay/neuter clinic and HHHA’s second adoption center.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in memory of Chuck and Nancy Laine to the Hilton Head Humane Association, P.O. Box 21790, Hilton Head Island, SC, 29925. All donations will be used for scholarships for students that want to attend veterinarian school.
