Charles Doggett
July 14th, 1934 - December 9th, 2024
Charlie Doggett a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on December 9, 2024.
Known for his unwavering faith, commitment to family, dedication to his work, and loyalty to his many close friends. Charlie led a rich life filled with accomplishments and deep connections with those around him.
Born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on July 14, 1934, Charlie excelled from an early age. As a high school athlete, he set records in track, long jump, and sprints, while playing halfback on the football team and wrestling. His love for music flourished in high school, as a member of the choir that was invited to perform at Madison Square Garden in New York. Charlie’s dedication to excellence was evident throughout his high school years, he was named the best all-around student in 1952 and earned awards in drama, speech, and track.
Charlie enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving from 1952 to 1956 during the Korean War. Stationed on the island of Py-do on the 38th parallel, he served as a Chaplain’s Assistant and manager of the NCO club, while also running track for the Air Force. He was recognized as the number one marksman at Lackland Air Force Base, out of 3,000 recruits.
In 1955, Charlie married his high school sweetheart, Patsy, who had been his neighbor since first grade. They were married for 51 years, sharing a lifetime of memories. Charlie and Patsy raised two sons, Eric and Brent. Patsy’s passing in 2006, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s, was a sorrowful chapter in Charlie’s life, one that gave him a deep empathy for others affected by dementia.
Charlie earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Central State College in Edmond, Oklahoma. Despite his academic background in education, he began his career in insurance with Travelers Insurance, where he worked for 13 years, eventually becoming District Manager for commercial lines in OK. Throughout his career, he earned numerous prestigious certifications. He achieved a C.P.C.U designation which is the highest award in the industry. Additionally, he earned two certifications from the Wharton School of Business that were equivalent to two Master’s Degrees. Charlie later established his own insurance agency, proudly representing Lloyd’s of London amongst other companies.
At 60, when many consider retirement, he joined Pinnacol Insurance of CO, where he worked for 17 years before retiring, leaving a lasting legacy.
An avid gym-goer since his high school days, Charlie became a competitive powerlifter in his 60s. In his 70s and 80s, he set national records, including a 350-pound bench press at age 73. His record-setting feats in powerlifting were a testament to his discipline and enduring strength. Charlie’s passion for fitness was matched only by his love for the camaraderie it brought.
As a dedicated member of Fort Collins Club, he forged countless friendships. After each Saturday workout, Charlie and his friends would gather for breakfast, a tradition that soon became the highlight of his week. Over the course of 30+ years, that post-workout gathering continued as breakfast with his closest friends. Or as he would call them his breakfast buddies. Charlie often joked about how they would give him a hard time, but he knew that the more they razzed him the more they loved him. This group of best friends sustained him through his 90 years.
Charlie’s life was filled with a love for music and singing. In recent years, he found joy performing with The Lodge Singers, where he sang Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and timeless Gospel music. When he wasn’t singing, Charlie was outside with his dog, Junior, who sat on his lap while he read. An avid reader, Charlie had a love for historical novels and expressed his belief of, “so many books, but so little time.”
Throughout his life, Charlie’s warmth and kindness left a lasting impact on those he encountered. He was known for his generosity, for always taking the time to introduce himself and made others feel welcome.
Charlie’s legacy will be remembered by his family, close friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His devotion to faith, family, friendships and work will continue to inspire those whose lives he touched.
Charlie is survived by his son Eric (Brenda), four grandchildren, Brandon, Lillibeth, Blain and Kylie. Charlie is proceeded in death by his wife Patsy, and their son Brent (Cinnamon) as well as his two lifelong friends Nelson Beckett and Bob Harper.
His final resting place is at the Doggett Family plot at Fairlawn Cemetery, Oklahoma City, OK.
