Walter Sturick
September 8th, 1946 - December 20th, 2024
Walter Sturick, 78, from Syracuse, NY, died peacefully, surrounded by family at his home in Elmira, NY on December 20, 2024.
Of Ukrainian heritage, Walter was born on September 8, 1946 in Goslar, Germany. Following the devastation of World War II, in 1951, Walter and his mother immigrated to the United States.
Walter's life was the embodiment of the American Dream. From growing up on Syracuse's Westside to playing football for the University of Albany.
He was a proud member of the Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA), where he served as Unit President from 1995 to 2009. He was a corrections officer at Jamesville Penitentiary for more than 25 years before retiring in 2008. During his career, Walter was promoted to Sergeant and awarded the Medal of Valor.
A proud U. S citizen, Walter loved his country and enjoyed discussing politics with friends and family. He was also an avid football fan and had a lifelong love for the Dallas Cowboys. Walter had a deep love for animals, kept countless pets over the years and always had a dog by his side. But Walter's greatest passion was his family, especially his kids and grandkids. Over the years, he created countless precious memories with them through his favorite pastime-road trips and long drives all over the Northeast.
Walter was predeceased in death by his mother Anastasia Sturick.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Dana Sturick; brother William Sturick; children, Anastasia “Stacey” Sturick (Gabe Agnello), Dennis Aguayo; grandchildren, Layne, Hannah, Isabella, Sophia, Santiago; great granddaughter, Cecelia.
