“Let us reach out to the children. Let us do whatever we can to support their fight to rise above their pain and suffering.”

Suzanne Fleming 78, of Kingsport passed away at her home on Thursday, January 9, 2025. She was born on October 31, 1946 in Kingsport to the late Paul and Pauline Fleming. Suzanne was a faithful Christian, who was devoted to her church, family, and friends. She never had children but adored her nieces and nephews and her life's work was to the welfare of children. Suzanne graduated from East Tennessee State University, then received her Masters of Social Work at Virginia Commonwealth University. She was then employed by the State of Virginia before retiring after 34 years as Assistant Director for Social Work from Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Department of Social Services. Suzanne was an adjunct professor at VCU School of Social Work. She was involved in various areas throughout the State of Virginia for the prevention of Child Abuse. She was a member of Governor Holton’s Task Force on Child Abuse and Neglect in 1973. Suzanne will be remembered by all her nieces and nephews as “Sissy Sue”. She was a faithful member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Richmond. After retiring and the passing of her parents she returned to Kingsport to be near her family and what a joy it was to have her “back home”.

Survivors include her brother, Donnie Fleming and wife Diana of Kingsport; sister, Kathy Moody and husband Ronnie of Jefferson City; nieces, Cindy Johnson (Walter), Kristy Fleming, Polly Easterling (Richard), Julie Smith (Steven); nephew, Andrew Wiles (Leigha); along with many great-nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 12pm to 1pm on Thursday, January 16, 2025 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home in Kingsport. A funeral service will follow with Chaplain Larry Munsey officiating.

A graveside service will follow at East Lawn Memorial Park with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

Suzanne loved flowers but her wishes were for any memorial contributions to be made to Shriners Children’s Hospital, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Oak Grove Baptist Church at 3801 Beulah Rd. Richmond, VA 23237 or a charity of you choosing.
